every now and then my computer is dropping the dvi card signal. the card is running, but is not out putting signal. it ususually happens after a sleep, but occasionally the signal will never start when the computer is started. a second reboot generally fixes it though. usually after reboot, the hdmi comes up...both vga and hdmi are active, but my comp automatically selects hdmi. (i have had to set my bios to leave the onboard vga as the primary, that way if it happens, i can swich to the vga signal so i can see what im doing, and reboot. )

another symptom is that the icons are all out of place and i have to keep moving them back, and its getting pretty annoying. makes me think its some kind of bios or memory error as it keeps "forgetting" its settings. i dont think its a driver issue as i used the drivers just before the 195.62 and they do the same. i have tried all different combinations of shutting down onboard drivers, leaving both active, etc. it does the same pretty much all the time.

any ideas? i think it could be a mobo vid card compatbility issue. im trying to find an upgraded bios as the one i have is 2 years old, but no such luck.


880gt oc(bfg) chipset is nforce 430 with 6150se onboard video
 
you've provided no information about your system, awesome.

so lets start from the front and you provide some info:
- what connection is used between your PC and your monitor?
- have you tested the monitor with something else?
- hardware specs
- from the limited info you've provided, you're using Hybrid SLI I assume?
- what OS are you using?
- is this a recent occurrence or has it always happened?
- when you say "a sleep", what do you mean?


all of that information harvesting aside
if the graphics card is outputting a signal, as in, you can connect something to an HDMI port on it or VGA port on it and it works, I'd look further down the chain for the problem
disable your onboard video, unless you're using Hybrid SLI, if you are, set it up right
 
sorry i forgot i didnt input my specs in the signature line. ill take care of that.

i have onboard vga connected to a monitor, and 8800 connected to an identical monitor.
the monitors are fine
amd 9550 quad, narra3 mobo (see first post for chipset) 5.14 version bios (latest i can find 6/20/08) 6 gb ram, 8800gt oc, win vista home premium x64
not using hybrid sli. i dont think its compatible with my system
i meant sleep as in hitting the sleep button that hibernates the pc (Standby)
its done it every since i put the card in..the card works, i just have this annoying glitch.

originally, AFTER i installed the 8800, i had the bios set to pciex16 as main video adapter. when the computer went in standby mode, it wouldnt restart the card. therefore i had no picture and had to do a hard boot ( bad juju with the software im running) so i had to leave the VGA as primary in the bios so it will still be active.

what happens now is that from pressing the on button, through post screen and ALL the way up to vista being loaded; video runs on the onboard vga, once vista is running and has loaded the drivers (i guess thats what happens) then the signal and desktop switches over to my 8800. at this point the vga monitor is still up, but just as an extended cloned desktop. i had to do this so that if the 8800 crashes again i can restart without the hard boot. its been the only safe way i can figure out how to get my system back. both the 6150se drivers and 8800 gt drivers are the same (195.62 from nvidia), and the both devices are functioning normally in the device manager...even when i lose the 8800 gt signal, the device manager still says its functioning properly...then a restart (most of the time) brings the 8800 back up (after vista is loaded).

i know the best way is to have 8800 as primary, shut off the onboard, etc etc, but for now i HAVE to leave it up to keep from killing my computer with these hard boots and losing all my work.

anways... basically the problem is the 8800 isnt displaying video after a standby. and when i restart the comp, all my icons are moved and i have to redo the resolution settings. its wierd, im probably not even explaining it well.
