Well, my brand new self-built PC died upstairs (been using it for 2 months at least now, no hitch). This is what happens. I press the power button, and after 3 seconds, it beens 4 times in rapid succession, then sits there. Nothing posts to the screen, and everything inside the PC seems to be running fine. Specs include Windows XP pro, AMD 2600+, 512mb pc3200 ram, an 80gb hard drive, a dvd 16x rom drive, 6 case fans. Right before this problem happened, the computer had frozen on my dad, and since it wasnt responding to anything done on keyboard and mouse, he held the power button for 5 seconds and it powered down. Ever since, it wont start past that beeping. Whats wrong with it?

Check the motherboard manual for what the 4 beeps in rapid succession means.

Generally the motherboard has diagnostic beeps (one beep after POST means normal, long beeps continually cycled means missing ram, etc etc)

AMI BIOS Beep Codes:

4 short = System timer failure = The system clock/timer IC has failed or there is a memory error in the first bank of memory.

Sounds a lot like this one...

Does your main board use AMI bios?

No, how do i do that without getting into anything on my computer?
Not sure what you mean by that, exactly, but this should all be in the manual. There's a line of 3 pins near the battery with a jumper over 2 of the pins. Switch the jumper to the other 2 pins, then back to its original position.

What brand and model mobo do you have? Can get all of this stuff off most manufacturer's websites.

To clear your BIOS, look for a three pin jumper on the mobo near the battery. Refer to your mobo handbook, but generally you just move the jumper over one pin for a few seconds and it resets the BIOS to default, then move it back to the original position.......sounds more like RAM failure at this point.
