Is 89 degrees Celcius normal idle?
I have the HIS ATI 4870x2 pretty much brand new.

My CPU temp is reporting 40c (6400)+
And there is no way 88c is coming out of my card , my room would be cooking.

what is your case cooling like. there is a shit ton of heat coming off the pcb and if its heating up your case then that's the same air being circulated back into the video card.

I have the Cosmos case , nothing is heating up that hot. The CPU is doing fine at 40c , very odd

Here is what Hardware Monitor reports ,

try adjusting the fans speed.... change it to manual control. try putting it to like 35%

that should bring the temp down quite significantly.

THE CCC gage isnt even in Red , so that temp to it isnt Hot per'se
It doesnt make sense.

What fans are you talking about? I cannot change my CPU fan as its part of a Peltier cooler.
The Vigor Monsoon II.

I just lowered the fan for the video card to 35% and my heat is 101c

What if I leave the case open , my room is pretty cool right now?
Would that bring it down.

damn on my brothers 4870 the auto fan control is 22% and it idles at 70c. bumping it to 35% lowers it to 50c. i thought maybe the x2 would be similar.

hmmm what if you put the gpu fan to 60%?

in overdrive there is a check box to allow manual control of the video card fan.

83'c should make the back plate of the video card cooler almost impossible to touch. if you can press your fingers to it for a few seconds, its possible that the card is reporting the wrong temps to catalyst.

I just put my fingers on the videocard vent and its fine , pretty warm but i can rub it fine with no burning skin heh
With case side off its at 73c
Just found a decent extra fan , gonna see if it helps

yikes a 4870x2 with a 6400 X2? what res are you playing at because you are likely bottlenecking the crap out of that card. depending on the res in some games you could literally be getting almost the same framerate with a single 4870. sorry this doesnt help with your issue but unless you are playing games at 2560 then that 4870x2 is way more card than your cpu is capable of feeding.

by back plate i mean the opposite side of the cooler. the side with the exposed pcb.

Yes I just opened the case and holy 'blank' it was hot. I just put in large fan to pull heat away from videocard to my bedroom. Its down to 78c . Jesus
Games work fine but I was always wondering why I got flickering , thought it was only due to Catalyst AI but maybe it was too hot.
This is idle mind ya , no load cept for a couple tray apps (Daemon Tools , Network Magic , Anydvd ect but no games.
Should I contact HIS?

considering this is how hot the card is at idle, i think you will have to rma the card.

Ok now its seems to have leveled down to 69c , much better but the stupid case door is off.

Sounds like an airflow issue in your case.

If you have the tools, you might want to dremel out a side hole for a fan or two, once blowing air onto the CPU, one blowing air onto the video card cage.

When I put a side fan on my case, it dropped temps significantly.

What drivers are you running? Do your clocks come down to 2D speed in desktop mode? Check the 2nd GPU especially.

Yes it is normal. My oc'd Diamond 4870x2 was in the high 90C temps until I water cooled it. Now its operating in the high 30C's.

I have excellent air flow in my case, but my X2 has recently having the same temp issue. Mine is currently idling at 84c @ 35% fan speed. I can't play any games right now without it kicking to 100% fan to try to cool it down.
