Ultra120 Extreme mounted sideways?

Any reasons this would be a bad idea? The heatsink doesn't fit well in the Antec 900 and it looks like it will be easier side-mounted. Not to mention the CPU heat will dump out the huge top fan. Thoughts?

Flip the rear exhaust fan around to provide fresh air for the fan. Or flip the upper fan, and put the 120 drawing air from there. Fresh air is best.

If you can fit the U120 in the conventional configuration in any way possible, a 120mm intake by the optical bays would be best.

I have the 120+ in my TJ09 with the configuration in the picture you posted with the heatsink fan blowing up and then having that other fan on top of the case blowing out as well. My E6750 @ 3.2 and ~1.3v stays around 20c on each core while browsing the web/idle.

I think this weekend I'm going to try the other way around where it's blowing out the back because I have a Kama Bay with a Scythe Fan blowing over the top end of the board and just to see the different temps if there is any.

Holy crap I tried it with my new Q6600 and I'm running at 3.8 GHz stable! Nice!!

The only problem I'm having is trying to mount it just right because I will get like 16-17c on one core and then 20-21c on another...

how are you measuring those temps? they seem awfully low

also, what thermal paste did you use?

My last Q6600 did that, there was like a 7C discrepancy on the 2 dies. I tried remounting my U120 a million times and it didn't help. I'm using a new CPU and mounting my 120 sideways and the cores are within 2C of each other. I can't say if it's the heat spreader or the way the HSF is mounted.

Well my last CPU I had was an E6400 on a EVGA 680i with the 120+ but pointing out the back and had the roughly 2c difference between the cores.

My 6750 doesn't usually go past more then 4-5c difference in each core. I don't think it's much of a concern really.

A C2D core temp. of 20C is about 68F. You're even geting readings less than this. Are you sure the computer is on when you measured these temps? :)

I have 2 Ultra E's and they're not that good.

Might help that it's about 30-40c outside daily and gets down to 25ish at night. Plus the computer is in the basement. But the minute I stress it, it jumps to around 35-38c but didn't break 34 last night running Prime95 all night.

I will post pictures of my rig soon(might be tonight) so keep looking to see if I posted. :)

Oh and scored 11355 on 3dmark06 last night. So was a good night for me! :)

At Lame's overclock, the chip is putting out a maximum of 100w of heat... Probably about 20w less, at full load.

If your basement is hovering around 50f, then I could easily believe those temperatures.

indeed .. thoose temps are no problem at all.

I have a E6600 in my server .. idling its ~16ish here in my apartment, it stands next to a window thats almost always a tiny bit open for fresh air. Closed case ofc.
