Ultra X3 1k problems?!?!

Hey everyone.

Recently, I purchased the eVGA 280GTX. I was using 2 Asus EN8800GTS 512 TOP cards, and a Thermaltake Toughpower 750 to run that with a QX9650, Asus Striker II Extreme and 2gb of DDR3. Everything was good before I switched over to the 280, and I read on the box that the included 2-6 pin to 1-8 pin adapter was for temporary use only, and that it was recommended to upgrade to a PSU that had a native 8-pin pci-e supply. Well, i went ahead and used the adapter that came with the 280, and I noticed that if i tried to alt+tab out of a game, when I went back into the game it would be very slow and choppy until i restarted the computer. Well, needless to say i traveled 160 miles north to Naperville, to the TigerDirect warehouse there. I purchased the x3, and got it all setup in my rig. Well, then it would randomly shut the computer completely down while trying to game. Never surfing the web, or watchin youtube or anything, just gaming. I took both the 280GTX and the PSU back and exchanged them. re-installed both new items, and performed a fresh install of vista, and now my RAID array will detect in POST, but not in windows. Also, the PSU emmits a very annoying buzzing sound whenever the HDDs are accessing. That, and it still crashes when i tried to game. I had to revert back to the toughpower and my GTS's .....what could be the problem?!?! Ultra doesn't even have a damn forum, so I can't see if anyone else is having this same problem ....and I exchanged both items, but it's still doing the shutdown thing. I revert back to my old stuff, and viola ..works like a champ ...any suggestions???? TIA!!

Luzah, I have the X3 1K and dont have any problems whatsoever.

The system on my sig (including 3 LCDs) consumes 400W at the wall according to my APC batterry backup.

Please, update the thread, because I am also considering getting a GTX 280, so I want to make sure there are no issues with the X3 and gtx 280.

Good luck

I had the X3 1,600 and ran heavy loads on it without any problems. Although, I did not try the 280GTX on it, so there may be some sort of new issue.

I also have the 1000W, and it doesn't emit any noises or anything regardless of load (although obviously no 280's here, just a 4850). The thing should be damn near silent.

Look at my sig.

I run two X2s in CrossfireX on a X3 1000 watt and it is rock steady.

I've had my X3 for a year and have had Triple SLI with 8800 GTXs, dual 3870s and dual 4870s before my current GPUs and the PSU has been like a rock.

Email Ultra. They are excellent and respond quickly.

Well ...I didn't find a solid answer to my problem from anywhere. Instead, I went back to TigerDirect and traded the eVGA 280GTX for a XFX 280GTX ....also returned the x3 1k, and got a thermaltake toughpower 850 ...no problems -period- now. So I can't exactly say which was the problem. Although I did have some people tell me that the eVGA 280's were having major problems with overheating ..more-so than other brands ....I cannot confirm this.

Don't read too much into those rumours. They all come from the same factory, sold to the partners by nVidia themselves. eVGA uses the same heatsink and PCB as XFX, and so does PNY or BFG.

Mav, you've been a great help to me man! I won't think too much about those rumors. As I stated tho, everything is working like a CHAMP now! Only one thing....I kind of wish i would've gotten the XXX version ...clock a bit higher on everything ...sigh, oh well! At least i will be prepared for all the new games coming!! Thanks again for everything guys, I really appreciate it!!
