Im thinking about getting this power supply but have heard mixed reviews on it. Some say that its a good flexible ps while others say that its not a smart design. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Thanks

i dislike modular because its another failure point

What alot of people don't like is the poor reliability of that PSU series and the other thing people do not like is the fact their power output is grossly exagerated.

davidhammock200 will bash it like there's no tomorrow, where jonnyGURU will give it modest praise. My standpoint is that you can get a better PSU for the money if you do a little more research. I'd rather take an Antec Neopower, but that's just me. The new Sunbeams do look half decent...

I'll bet you a box of Krispy Kremes that their power output is NOT grossly exaggerated. ;)

I set my load tester to 28A on the 12V, 18A on the 5V and 10A on the 3.3V. -5 and -12 are set at 0.5A and the +5VSB is set to 2A. My math shows that coming out to about 477.5W.

I then took a brand new 500W out of the box....

And hooked it up.....

And fired up the load tester. Because the 12V and 5V were a little high, the actual load turned out to be 480.3.

As you can see, the 12V is at 12.06, the 5V is at 5.08 and the 3.3V is at 3.23. All well within spec.

I then kicked my 12V up to 32A.

This made for a total wattage of 522.8W.

Note the clock on the laptop. 2:30. I'll be back after 3:00 with an update and one last photo.

Later that night....

I sharpened the last two photos in Adobe and they doubled in size! WTF?!?

Anyway....

3:03PM. The 12V dropped a little, but are still within spec and who's going to put a continuous > 500W load on their PC for over half an hour? 11.88V, 5.06V, 3.22V.

Total watts is 521.8W. I lost one watt.

Right now the rebates they have on them are tough to beat. They're dirt cheap because they're blowing them out because the new 550W X2's came out. Just make sure you're certain there's enough juice for your build.. DO NOT use the 500W on a Socket A system w/o a 2x2 connector (crossload problems. Get the 400W if you have a Socket A) and don't expect the dual 80MM fans to be quiet. Oh.. and if you use a small case, the stiff cables may get in your way (although you can "massage" them to get them to be more pliable) and if you use an upsidedown case the 2x2 connector may not reach. You'll have to use a Molex to 2x2 adapter. Other than that.... I like 'em. :)

BASH! BASH!
BASH! BASH!

Not recommended for DFI N4's.

Ok, I've done my job! :p

jonny, are you still in NY?

D.C. Not N.Y.

Would've been on earlier, but I had to talk to level two tech support to find out there weren't enough IP addresses for all of the guests at the hotel. :(

Highlight of the day: I saw Hulk Hogan at Tampa Internation Airport. :)

Hulkamania is once again the most powerful force in the universe.

Dude.... when I was a kid, and he had that cartoon and stuff. Hulk was IT!

And now he lives in Tampa and his daughter sings the National Anthem at the Lightning games.

Sometimes Hulk is at the games too, but him ripping his shirt off and doing the whole "bring it on!" thing is a little silly. Worth a laugh.... but after a while you have to wonder what the Canadians are thinking. :D

You guys are getting off topic with the whole Hulk ordeal. The reason why I ask about this is because of the rebate at Fry's of $50 which would make the ps to come out to about a sweet $30!!! Im not looking for something state of the art. Just want something to adequtely power my system.

Sorry about that. System in your sig?

Hulk works out at the gym my wife works at. So I see him all the time.

Still looking good for a 90 year old. ;)

I have 3 Ultras. 1 fried. The other 2 for the money, you really cant beat them.

Abit Vt7 Mobo
3.4 Ghz Pentium 4
BFG 6800 Ultra
1 Gb Kingston PC3200
100 Gb Western Digital
160 Gb Maxtor
On Board Audio
480 Watts PSU
Windows Xp Professional
I see, $400 for a video card & $30 for the PSU. :(

I own 2 500w psu's. In both rigs in my sig. Excellent performance for me, and very stable rails. Once you go modular, you never go back ;)

Kermie: You live in the Tampa/St. Pete area?

And did you ever find out if that one fried PSU was because of the PSU or the board because I know you had that Enermax that wen't up like the 4th of July too. I just noticed your sig still says "No PSU" on that one build. I thought you would have that thing RMA'd by now.

qbackin: Did you get the black one?

OP: For what you have in your sig, it's fine. I'm not sure I have enough confidence in Youngyear to add much more to your PC, though (the new ones are made by Wintech, but those aren't the ones getting blown out for half price.) Fortunately, you can't go SLI in that board so your power demands don't really get any higher than they are now. ;)

I'm pretty sure when you only feel compelled to put "480W PSU in your sig" and not what make/model that it's something pretty crappy. ;) So for $50, that's not a bad direction to go.

I did. My NeoPower was modular, and my Enermax isn't. Of course there aren't too many EPS12v modular PSU's out there.

I have an x-connect, I haven't turned it on yet and hope there is no problems. I have a 400w I got only what I could afford, picked it up at microcenter, rather would go to the store to pick it up than have to wait for it in the mail.

Yes I'm am the same type of person who will buy a lower than average powersupply. I use them for a couple of years and get better powersupplies. On some of my computers I am not worried of overclocking or etc, I use them on legacy systems for folding.

I got the X-connect because it was modular and it was inexpensive. And I was hoping that it could power a bare minumum of a sli setup, if it don't then I will save up for awhile for the Hiper 580w.

My x-connect will do what it needs to do, I expect nothing less or more out of this unit, just for it to do it's job.

10X LCD's!

Yep. About as necessary as that video where Tom's goons pulled the heatsink off of the AMD CPU while it was running.

Before I go w/ 10 LCD's, I think I'd just go with one really big LCD. :D

I see where it says the PSU is a Tagan but the picture clearly shows an X-Connect. Typo?
