have a question i have this ultra x 500 watt power supply yes i bought it for looks :D i read several reviews on it and i really didnt seem to find anything bad on it but it sure seems to get slammed on here.my question is i have the following setup

asus p4c800-e deluxe
p4 northwood 3.2
1gig patriot ddr 400
audigy 2
visiontek x800pro
maxtor 160 gig 7200rpm
dvd burner
cd rom

do i need something different i am not over clocking right now.i have been thinking of that
antec neopower 480 that everyone seems to talk about on here will i notice a difference between the power supplies :confused: also maybe its normal i really dont know but it sounds like my fans spin alot fast when i first turn my computer on and then they slow down another reason why i posted this??any help would be great
 
I think I have said this now a million times but here is +1.

The x-connect is not a high end supply it is a low to mid range premodded PSU. It probably won't eat your computer but some have failed rather spectacularly, and at least 2 that failed when really tested....not I ran x,y,z components some bling case fans and measureed my voltages off the mobo sensor test but real tests.

Being a low to mid supply it will provide power, it won't provide good protection under voltage sags, it will derate pretty poorly with temp, it may not be clean power, but in all likelyhood it won't eat your system.......but if things goo bad it won't provide nearly the protection of a better PSU...and for god sake don't load it near it's rating.

Edit: and it is made by Young Year not Powmax........however that is like saying my Gremlin pwns your Yugo.
 
i had read that review once and if you go to ultra's homepage and go to there forums it talks about that review and they say they sent them a new one and they gave it a thumbs up.but still it does bother me,so what about the antec neo power 480 will i notice a differance in the way things work????or which one for what i have :D

I ma one of the few who actual skulks there. They claimed it was an engineering sample...but that is what they said to Maximum PC who while not a perfect test did a better than average one. 2 big reviewers getting "engineering samples" marked as live product smells fishy to me.


but still it does bother me,so what about the antec neo power 480 will i notice a differance in the way things work????or which one for what i have :D

Let's put it this way you won't necessarily but your components will. And they will like the tighter regulation, and better quality in turn liking you more

i actually wouldnt mind buying one for an htpc. power would be kept to a minimum and I dont care about the hardware much.
would only be running 1 hd, 1 basic vid card on tvout, minimal fans

Guess my Aspire clearcase blue will go in there for now
 
You can mod just about any PSU with a transparent cover, and power modulation sockets. I really like those Ultra cables, though. Do they come in blue?

They do come in a UV Blue, but it's more of a transparent cover that glows blue under serious uv light.
 
awww crapo i just ordered one of the new ultra x 500 watt the black with green lighting and green cables , it had damn good reviews though and had reviced serveral rewards from differnt sites so i bought it lol

but i also have been running one of the apsire 500 watt power supplys the one with the clear cover and uv green cables and it has done just fine for the past year and a half i dont think the ulrta could be anymore cheaper made hehe

just wanted to update everyone i have ordered a antec 550watt from the egg and an ati silencer for the x800 pro i fell better knowing i got rid of the junk power supply now :D

Just drop a wtb in the FS/FT section or check with chilly dog or incumudro (among others).......their PSU's bit it from what I remember.
 
bump just wanted to let everyone know i got my antec installed and its a world of differance my fans dont spin down and i really think my computer works better ultra sucks :D

I am sorry to here that because the Ultra should handle your system with quite a bit of overclocking without problems.

To put the crap this PSU gets around here in perspective, there are about 50 positive reviews on the Ultra and about 2 negative ones. There are also no more negative user experiences around than with any other company (like my HD killing Antec experience).... But still it gets panned heavily here for some reason.

I am not saying it's Uber, but it's certainly good enough for about 80% of all enthusiast systems out there. Of course with some people around here my opinion doesn't count for much because I actually suggest stupid things like telling gamers who are building PC's to get quality 400mhz 2.5/4/4/7 RAM for $125 instead of "Fancy-Brand" Ultra Uber-Extreme Platinum Edition "With the fancy leds on it" 2/2/2/4 RAM for $250+, and then suggest the take the savings and buy a better videocard than a Vanilla 6800 or X700 or whatever weak-ass card they were planning on getting... Oh, and there was the crap I got for suggesting that Raptor drives are a waste of money for almost everyone. I guess you suck if it takes you 31 seconds too boot instead of 30 (Yes, tests have proven it makes all of a 1 second difference).

Of course you don't just have to take my word for the quality of this PSU, here's a very recent positive review by a guy who actually has proper equipment and who knows PSU's pretty well:

Those aren't real reviews. ;)

While it may not be the generic doorstop we all make it out to be, the fact of the matter is (to me at least) that it places bling before performance. The X-Connect overvolts on the +12V rail, it has been shown to overvolt in many legitimate reviews... it's that overvolting that can fry components. It's really a no-brainer when the OCZ Modstream 450W is priced similarly to the X-Connect 500W. The Modstream wins, hands down.
 
Holy crap batman another case of poorly done reviews being flung up as worth a damn. Who wants to hear the rant again?
