So i decided to RMA my Ultra Xfinity 600watt when i put it in a buddy's system to figure out what was going on with his system and it started to smoke. Well, i finally figured out that the PSU i was using has been dying over the years and now i have RMAd it... but theres something weird going on here...

Ultra is giving me a Coolmax PSU?

Not only is this a different brand, its a completely different cooling system and cable management. Granted, it does seem to have better 12v rails.

The question is... am i being downgraded or upgraded?

Here are the two said PSUs...

Ultra 600 watt Xfinity

Coolmax CX1-600B PCI Express 600W Power Supply.

Wow, I'm completely confused here, if you RMA an Ultra PSU, to the Ultra manufacturer, you HAVE to get an Ultra PSU back, not a Coolmax, WTF? I can understand a different Ultra model PSU, but a completely different brand? What is that about!

WTF?

Did you do the RMA via Ultra or through the store where you bought the PSU?

Though by no means definitive of Coolmax's entire line of PSUs, considering the three bad reviews that Coolmax PSUs got over at jonnyGURU, it might be a downgrade of sorts. However Ultra has shown that a company can have shitty and excellent PSUs in its current lineup. So there might be great Coolmax PSUs out there. Just dunno if that particular model is.

From the design alone it should be quieter at least, and Xfinity is actually one of the decent Ultra powersupplies.

Dude, i am JUST as baffled as you are. Ive been dealing with Ultra 100% of the way, its the weirdest thing ever. I shipped it in, and today i decided to ask what was going on with my RMA since they had recieved it on friday and then i email em today and i get a response(speedy at that) and they tell me a replacement has already shipped( not so great communication).

Also, i did purchase this PSU direct from Ultra... so its really weird that they're doing this.

Honestly though, i have no idea why im getting a coolmax back from ultra. What i wanna know is, should i be complaining? :p ;)

After having issues posting with a brand new Ultra xfinity 600 I replaced it with this product. Very happy with the results. No more issues! It looks well made from the outside. I think the cardboard box it came in is better made then the Ultra PSU itself. I would recommend this product and I plan to stick with coolmax in the future...assuming this unit passes the test of time :)"

HAHAHA

Yes, i totally saw that. I showed it to a buddy of mine and we both laughed. :D

The cardboard box thing is pretty funny.:D :p

I guess complaining would be up to you...But where does the warranty stand with the Coolmax PSU? What are they going to tell you if your brand new Coolmax PSU dies within a month or so of its arrival? Will they shaft you by telling you they don't sell or support Coolmax PSU's, and only warrant Ultra PSU's?

That is what I would be alittle peeved at, if that were to happen.

Thats actually a really good question, because i have a lifetime warranty with my ultra that i had....

You sir have made a really good point, how the heck is this going to work?

I guess im not that peeved cuz it is a backup PSU but still... I will be sure to ask those questions of them tomorrow.

Has this happened to anyone before?

I would be worried if your lifetime warranty carrys over to the coolmax or not. If it were me, i wouldnt accept anything else besides another ultra branded PS.

I agree, you can reject the shipment! I would definitely call them up and ask for some REAL assurance such as a email for proof that it will carry over before accepting the different PSU's shipment

This aint good, I got a Ultra 1000w and hope it doesnt go on me lol. All I know I would like a Ultra for a Ultra, nothing else even though it might be little better.

So you talked directly with ULTRA Procucts customer service??? Right??

I have an X3 that had to go into RMA and I got the same Ultra brand back.

That's odd unless they (ultra) bought out Coolmax.
Oh, that EVGA Precision utility is pretty cool, by the way. Cudos to EVGA on that. I still prefer RivaTuner but the Precision thing beats ntune any day of th week.:D

Maybe Jonnyguru could tell you the OEM for Coolmax????

AP-650X is another model number listed on/associated that particular PSU, if that helps any. *No* UL number listed on the label (@ Newegg's pics that is), I don't care who it is, that's a big red flag to me and I wouldn't accept that PSU in any way.

[edit]
Oh, and going by Newegg's pics again, 3.3v @ 30A, 5v @ 55A, 12v @ 19Ax2...Not exactly the specs I'd be looking for to put in a modern system.

To my knowlege they do not sell direct retail, at least currently.
