Ultimate or Home Premium?!?

Ultimate will have the Business features like Shadow copy, remote desktop, joining domains...along with the MCE features of Home Prem.

ultimate for that price. business would be better IMO if you can get it cheaper. the media center features you miss out on in business are crap anyway. ultimate is a total waste of money for $400. for $150, it starts to sound better.

Have to disagree about the Media Center features. Windows Media Center is VERY good. It's stable and reliable and I loving watching HDTV with it. It's handicapped by CableCard restrictions when building your own system unfortunately, but DIY CableCard is tough because of licensing restrictions form the cable companies not because of technology.

$150 for Ultimate is a good deal.

Better to pay the extra $36 for Ultimate now, than the $100 upgrade fee they will want later. Too small of a price difference to not do it.

i'd say Ultimate, just because of the DreamScenes, i just love them :)

DreamScene is pretty cool but it seems a little unstable while watching TV with Windows Media Center. the only systems crashes I've experienced in a while occurred while running DreamScene and watching TV simultaneously.

I have to agree that the Media Center stuff on vista... It's most definitely not crap. Anyone that thinks that just hasn't looked into exactly what it is and what it does.

I'd get the one that fits your needs, which is the same answer given for every one of these threads. You know what features you need or don't need. If that extra money would go to a better video card, or an extra 2 GB of memory, it might be better to get Home Premium...but in the end, no one else can answer this question but you.

That is another consideration to keep in mind, too --

I had XP pro, and I wanted to upgrade to Vista. I didn't want Ultimate, as Home Premium was plenty for me. However, the upgrade path from XP to Vista wouldn't let me use Home Premium, I had to go Ultimate.

So if you go ultimate now, when you upgrade to Windows WhateverTheNextVersionIsCalled, you're most likely going to have to go with the more expensive upgrade.

If you're not going to use the features of Ultimate, I say don't buy it. That we you can buy any version of the next release of windows and not be locked into the High End version.

Here's the upgrade path. And here's the clip I'm referring to:

You can upgrade from your current edition of Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 to a corresponding or better edition of Windows Vista by purchasing and installing an upgrade copy of Windows Vista.

I have Ultimate 64 and I chose Ultimate over premium because it can do a full disk image and not just that lame restore thing that doesn't work half the time. I can backup to DVD or second hard drive or partition. I love it. I can muchk up my system all I want trying drivers and settings out and restore when I am done.

Just for the record, you could do that with any version of Vista, using some good, free tools that are available.

Not saying you can't use something else to back your stuff up but I couldn't find anything as easy as using the one in Vista Ultimate and since it comes with Vista I shouldn't have to worry about compatibility issues.

Ultimatley it's up to him what he gets. I am just telling him why I got it.:) Don't regret it and for that price as long as it is from a legit company, I would buy it.
I have Vista 64 OEM and downloaded SP1 from the system builder site. OT but since I am posting I downloaded the OEM preinstallation kit and am currently making a backup partition and IMage with drivers... gotta love the ease of installation after doing that.

BartPE and DriveImageXL is a free solution (combination) that works great, and couldn't be easier. I would like to try out the built in imaging program, and see how it's compression ratios compare to Ghost, TrueImage, and DriveImageXL.

Aye, and only a $26 difference if he wants to upgrade Home Premium to 64 bit

well I actually bought the OEM home premium, and used the rest fo the money to buy UT3 collectors Edition on sale for $40

OEM - wtf?!?

Well Im just looking at the Microsoft OEM website, and it says that I have to be a partner to download SP1. And that I also need a OPK, a preintallation kit, to install this version of vista?!?

Ok I've been installing OEM XP for years, and I never had to do any of this?!?

I would get the Ultimate version.
You might not need all the additional features, but hey!, it is the ULTIMATE version!

just fyi - in my experience vistas image compression is terrible compared to trueimage. so dismal it makes me wonder if it uses any compression at all. I gave up vistas integrated imaging after trying it out for a week, and went back to trueimage which is far superior imho.
