I am currently looking to design the ultimate carputer, I am getting a new job soon that will allow me to be able to pay my bills and have fun at the same time!!! post more soon

You should just take a SUB box and put the computer in that (No speakers in the SUB box).

You wouldn't do bad to imitate this person:

Definately check out mp3car.com and read through the 'Show off your project' and the sub-forum 'Worklogs'.

You'll have to have mad skills and resources to one up these guys.

I went and took some meassurements today in the vehicles that I am able to afford. The Jeep Grand Cherokee seems to hold the most promise :). also I have made kind of a mental map of all the wiring and everything. the only part that i cant place in my mind is the screen. The system is going to have a touchpad instead of a mouse. A rear facing camera with a fish eye lens and I would love to make a forward looking camera for night vision, we have a lot of deer that come out at night, and allthough I have been very lucky not to hit any I think that this feature is going to save me at one point. I have seen HUD in some cars, like the vette and the cadilac, and am investigating on how to do that as well. The main unit of the pc is going to be under the drivers seat and the dvd drive and such are going to be in the glove compartment. I only have a couple things that are really getting to me.

  • I live in upstate New York, and that intales that i will need parts that can stand the "f"ing cold weather.
  • I have no garage and this will be a daily driver.
I can make a docking station for the unit, this has been planned out as well, incase I need to take the unit in durring the ungodley cold weather that we can get and do get from time to time.soo here is the over all plan for the unit

  1. Must Play Music, Movies and stuff like that.
  2. Must be portable, incase I do decide to remove the unit durring the winter months
  3. The screen must also be detachable
  4. HUD, and rearview capabilities
  5. possably work with XM radio,
  6. run through the car stereo speekers.
  7. Vehicle must look stock inside and out and I can only spend $5k, oopps watching monster garage while typing this. scratch the $5k thing
  8. Navigation system might be nice as well.

The only problem I can see the cold causing you is if it makes the lubrication in the fans more viscous. However, if it's cold enough for that, it's probably cold enough that you won't need the fans anyway. Cold in general shouldn't be a problem--remember, those nuts in Finland keep using liquid nitrogen to get nutty overclocks. And that's a whole lot colder than upstate NY. I would be far more concerned about the hot, humid summers. Yes, I've spent a couple summers in upstate NY.

If you want to use the display for night vision, I would suggest putting it on top of the dash so you can see the reflection in the windshield without taking your eyes off the road. You'll have to reverse the image to get the right left/right orientation. I would recommend against using it for night vision in a place where you'll have to take your eyes off the road.
The main unit of the pc is going to be under the drivers seat and the dvd drive and such are going to be in the glove compartment.
In that case, you'll have to use a USB drive.

Ah, I thought so too, but then we bought a house...

I have lived in Potsdam NY so i can attest to the fact that it is fuckin cold up there especially in February. (have you ever felt your eyebrows freeze?)

I have a carputer that just plays mp3s that I built about 5 years ago. The only thing that doesn’t work in the cold is the lcd screen. It seems that LCDs are completely useless when the temperature gets below about 30 degree F. The screen sometimes starts working again if the interior gets warm enough though.

The computer itself is housed in a special custom case that fits behind the seat. ( I drive a 96 f150 std cab) I only have to fold the seat forward, disconnect 3 wires, and pick it up by the handle to take it out.

When I want to update the music on it I bring it into the house, plug it into my home network and KVM, and update away.

If you run it through the stereo, you lose one of the main advantages of a carputer and that is the sound quality. You could probably accomplish the same thing with some LCDs, cameras and a Rio/iPod, for what you are asking.

Dude, a $20 usb 802.11g thumbstick would save you the trouble. Do all your ripping in the warm house and transfer it!

The day that i moved into my apartment, the temperature outside was -28F, and the wind was blowing so that makes it about -35F. I have had the LCD on my head unit refuse to work before. Any way

I have some bad news, I couldnt get the car that I was hoping for, but after thinking about it, I could never trade in my 1990 Chevy 2 door lumina, and since I have gone to a vocational school and have worked on this car since the day I bought it. I have almost memorized the wires in it, lol not really but I am going to use this car at the moment. And after 10 more years and another 100,000 miles it will be a clasic!!! I am looking at upgrading the engine, suspension just for sh!+$ and giggles.

I have to go clean it out a little now then I will start to take the pics and plan the placemants.

Hey napster, you going to clarkson? :) I never thought I would actually see someone who has experienced the potsdam cold on [H] :p You know its cold when the windchill is "N/A".

I went to Clarkson. I graduated in 2002. They refer to that area as the "North Country".

They didn't have those when i originally built it so my workaround was just to take the cpu part inside. The wireless thumbstick is a good idea. It will probably be my next upgrade for it being it hasn't had one since i originally put it together. :D

Oh really? What was your major? And how'd you do once you got out if you dont mind me asking? ;)

I actually went to SUNY Canton I have gone to clarkson and dumpster diving a couple times. I have to get some basic work done to my car tommorrow then I will be able to start my mods..

Alignment
tire
brakes
exhuast

Hey 2uantuM, let me know when you get in town, I would love some help on this Mod, it is going to be fun, and I have some crazy Ideas and need some one to keep me grounded on them! I think that it would be cool to finally have some one else who Knows about the forums to help me out on the mod, and maybe we could get a mod going on your ride as well!

I majored in Electrical Engineering and I got a job with decent pay and benefits right out of college. I work for an Research and Development facility in Northern NJ for the US ARMY.

Im wondering about them car-'puters. In my car (which I just painted black), the inside thermometer hit 120F in the shade of the car, when I was stuck in traffic. Thats on the INSIDE of my car, with the thermometer in the shade.

Before that when I had the windows rolled up, the thermometer was well past 130F, and the red stuff was all the way up into that little bulb at the top. I thought this was a little disturbing, thinking of how the @)(# is a car-'puter supposed to stay alive in there?

That's pushing it a bit, but a working temp for a processor is sometimes over 140F. I think that's average.

Today i looked around, several people have asked if I should put it it the trunk. This us an issue seeing that every few weeks i have to bail out the spair due to a leak from god knows where. At the moment I am debating on putting it under the front passenger seat. There is a vent under there, but I hardly have people in the back any way, and a couple of the cases that I have been looking at will allow me to leave some room for a bit of flow. There is a spot in the dash that I have been looking at for quite some time and am thinking that when I replace the dash Might go ahead and cut an area out for the pc, I will try and take some pics of the areas in question asap.

That is a nice mod, I was kinda thinking that the mod that I want to do is going to be a little less noticeable, till I pop the screen out.

I think that I have found the issue with the trunk leaking, After fixing it I am going to see about getting the trunk cleaned up a little and maybe mounting the docking port for the carputer at or near the back dash, if the car puter is in the trunk , I may ust have to run a usb cable into the dash and then have the keyboard, mouse, the cd drive will have its own run to the pc.

Second Page. No Pics. No Car. This shouldn't be in worklogs.

EDIT: After posting I read it and that seemed a little mean. Sorry, didn't mean to be like that. But....

I just started a new job this week and have had a lot to learn, I do plan on posting some pics this weekend, After a little cleaning of cars interior and then some mock case tests. I used to have one of those little gateway essiantials cases and have been thinking that I am going to try and find another. when i had that pc I did test fit it and it seemed to fit just about right.

I will post before Sun after noon. Please leave the thread open till then.

New pics
Havnt done a rough fit yet, still trying to make a kind of test box to fit, my new job is taking up a lot of my time that I could be working on this.. But not to spare, I will get working on it soon!!! the pics are at my site.,

I have the motherboard placed, nothing fancy. By the way, how can i get rid of the Compaq sign when it boots?
