The UK Government has plans to turn off all Internet porn sites at the ISP level by legislation pending talks with leading broadband providers. The plan cuts off all access to porn sites, but allows for parental ‘opt-in’ to allow access. This follows a successful program limiting access to child porn websites.

Unlikely to happen. Notice this is an Australian website reporting. The Aussies have been trying to setup their own web filters - which failed on the first day of use. I expect this report is appearing to try and show support elsewhere.

I can't see the broadband companies wanting to go into this level of filtering. Just imagine trying to keep a block list up to date of ALL porn? Not really feasible. Yeah, there is logic in chasing that minority of Kiddie Porn and keeping that locked out as there are legal issues involved. But trying to block perfectly legal porn will become tricky.

It is especially daft as what will be defined as "porn"? Are they also going to block The Sun newspaper with its Page 3 Boobs?

Also, if I ran a porn website and found that the UK Government were telling ISPs to block this perfectly legal business, I would be thinking about legal action against the ISPs involved.

I expect the standard answer here from the ISPs will be - "who is going to pay for this?". Then nothing will happen.

Wow, if it's not the US government trying to regulate sites with copyrighted content, it's the UK government trying to block porn sites. Like I said before, just leave the internet alone.

I can see business IT people rejoicing at this but I can understand the fundamental issue with free speech violation, but at least you can opt-in if you don't want anything to be blocked.

I can definitely see content control software developers scream bloody murder at this law though.

Lets just get the XXX domain going and parents can regulate the net to protect their kids. Whats the hold up, the Porn Industry, "But we need to be able to get into the minds of the impressionable kids at an early age to get them hooked on SEX, or we won't make any money on the toys and films.

If it goes through it won't be hard to get:

"...but allows for parental ‘opt-in’ to allow access".

Also, as we all know porn is only available on websites :D

opt- in, people like privacy they don't want it noted somewhere they opted in for the porn channels, once that is done then what, will they be monitoring these people who "opted in" for porn to see if they are more likely to commit some sexual crime or some crap.

i don't think kids can sign up for internet anyways so how about the government pisses off and let parents do their jobs, all this is doing is creating more lazy parents who would rather someone else raises their child.

Parental filters are great, but they should be "opt-in", not "opt-out". Unless of course they have a hidden agenda with the filtering...

crazy aussie media, they just want the public to think it's not just them that is getting screwed over internet wise by their government.

If this was true then it is such a retarded idea but then again the same thing can be said about the millions of parents who want someone else to do their job and expect governments to raise a good kid for them.

Exactly. It'd be far more feasible on a logistical sense to just have it so you hand over your kid at birth and take a voucher which you can redeem for said child 18 years later.

This "news" story is just some idiot politician trying to score points. The ISPs will have none of it.

They'll just use a damn myspace proxy in the US, and then download porn through that. Or everyone is going to learn more about torrents, thus increasing knowledge about piracy, thus increasing piracy as well.

Idiots.... it's unstoppable just like the war on "drugs"

Haha yes! I could not agree more. Perhaps this will become a global thing. Leave the smut to magazines. I'm fine with that.
