Uhmm wierd XP problem

We have an XP machine here at work, and only some audio works.

Driver: AC97 (onboard sound)

Works:
Playing music in WMP
Speaker test through "Sound Effect Manager" in control panel.

Not working:
Through browsers
Messaging clients
When in control panel > sound devices > sound tab > If we highlight a event sound to play, we can not even click play/preview.

Perhaps an obvious answer, but did you check the volume control? Maybe you have Wave on mute or something.

Im 95% sure i checked that, but "Wave" ill have to check again.
