So last night my main computer gets a windows error that says: "Delayed write failed in directory X (which is where F@H is running), it could be a hardware failure or a problem with the network." So in my infinite wisdom I reboot cause i was about to install AOE III but hadn't yet. So I shut down F@H and restart my machine. Install AOE III and play for about 3 hours. Then I fire F@H back up after I get done and watch in horror as the 600 point gromacs that was 87% complete gets an IO error and can't write to the file or something like that. It then deletes that work unit which almost makes me sick and downloads a new one. That one dies too. I'm like wtf is going on! So I delete that entire directory and redownload the client on a different partition. It starts up fine and is going all night. I wake up to the same delayed write fail message this morning. This is NOT good, I don't need a flakey computer to deal with right now! Anyone ever had this problem? My HD setup currently are the 2 IDE drives in the sig on serial adapters then RAIDed on the NF7-S controller. :(
 
It may be time to test your memory there bud....sounds like the block it is trying to write to is bad. Just my (quickly thrown together, early morning) thoughts
 
Also test the hard drives with the manufacturers diagnostics using the thorough test option.
 
Hmm my Mushkin black hasn't given me anything but great performance since I bought it 2 years ago, haven't even used more than 2.6v on it! I don't think delayed writes are used on RAM either I think thats mainly a HD thing cause the HD is so slow. TDG where can I get manufacturer diagnostics for an IBM hard drive these days? I didn't even know they(the diagnostics) existed.
 
I had the delayed writing error on my machine about 6 months ago. It was the first step in my one-week-old Seagate 200GB totally failing. In the end, files would randomly disappear/appear and the drive wouldn't be recognized by the BIOS about 50% of the time.

So, I'd recommend moving all files not easily replacable then modifying the recommended Windows registry entries (search Google for how to change certain parameters) to minimize the chance of the failure occurring. Unfortunately, none of these solved the problem for me and I ended up exchanging the hard drive. The second one has worked like a charm for about 6 months.

IBM hard drives are still alive and kicking under the Hitachi brand name. Download the Drive Fitness Test from www.hgst.com under Support and Downloads.
 
This sounds like another reason to not run Raid 0 on a machine. It sounds like of the HDs(or raid controller) is dying.

Ugh, if that SATA controller is dying i will NOT be happy. I can deal with the hard drives dieing, I need more space anyway, i've only got 80 gigs! But I'd really like to have a SATA drive to replace a dead one, so that controller had better be working! Thanks for that linkage as well, I'll run it tonight after work.

Had the problem about six months ago, turned out to be a bad drive cable. If you have spares for that cable string, replace one part at a time and test with the drive diagnostics.

Feel lucky. The cable I had to replace was a U320 SCSI, 7 position with active termination. Thank the gods it wasn't the Cheetah 15.2 it was hosting. :D

Hmm I don't think i've got an extra SATA cable around anywhere. Maybe I'll shut her down and check the cables to make sure they're making a good connection sometime. Or i'll just run her till something dies.
 
Well son of a bitch, the drive fitness test doesn't work on drives attached via any silicon image controller, thats just awesome!
