R.I.P. my Viewsonic VX2435wm... with a slight persistent squealing that tended to go away within a few seconds of it turning on, today the squealing went away but so did the power. The power light on the front of the monitor went out and now it won't turn back on but for a short burst after having been completely unplugged for hours.

I haven't done much research into a new monitor, wasn't expecting to purchase one unlike when I bought he 2435 back in late 2006. The usage of my monitor has also changed, while I still game and do computer tasks I no longer use the monitor to watch television/movies. So I turn to you all for suggestions, feel free to post questions and I will most likely quickly respond as I am on Spring Break.

Usage: Gaming, Research/Coding (CS PhD student), light Photoshop/GIMP usage
Panel Type: IPS
Resolution: 1920x1200
Size: 23/24"
Price Range: Haven't set one due to lack of research, the VX2435wm was about $400 when I bought it.

There seem to be a lot of 1080p monitors, don't think there were any in 2006, widescreen computer monitors were all 16:10. I dread how I would react to the switch to 1080 and 16:9. But I guess if it has to be done, it has to be done. But I highly prefer not to switch to 16:9

For games I trend across the map, the only online FPS I have touched recently is TF2 and used to play Battlefield games. The only other multiplayer games I have played tend to be MMOs (not WoW). For single player the range is great, Assassin's Creed, Batman Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age, Portal, BioShock, Mass Effect, Company of Heroes... so like I said, the gamut.

My condolences...

You might look at Dell UltraSharp U2410, which is 16:10

FWIW, it is hard to understand that Monitor Manufacturers don't understand that, for many Users, 16:10 is more useful than 16:9

HP ZR24W Review is better and cheaper than the U2410. The Asus PA246Q is also better than the U2410 and doesn't use the harsh AG coating. A foriegn review site reports 40ms of lag though which is too much for gaming, wait a week or 2 and PRAD.de will have the proper numbers in their in depth review.

If you really want to game though a Dell U2311H and Samsung 2333t will cost you 400$ together. 2>1 for productivity. The U2311H is the best gaming IPS and the 2333t uses the lightest AG coating and a high contrast ratio making it great for reading.

Thanks for the recs, I will check out the others mentioned first because the U2331H is 16:9 and I would prefer to keep my 1200 vertical lines.

The dell U2311h will look much better than the x1200 monitors though. Having the extra 120 pixels over better image quality should not be a priority, especially when you can have 2 montiors for the price of 1. Just saying..
