Well, we had a nice little snow storm over the last 2 days or so.... Over Monday night, the snow got really wet/heavy.... took down god knows how many limbs and trees... Had to turn off the boxen for fear of power spikes...... the power is fixed and back on.....

BUT, now the cable is out.... No cable means no access to the net..... which means I have 4 PCs (6 clients) sitting.... waiting... doing nothing...... this morning 4 or the 6 were waiting to send/recieve with the other two only having another 6 or 7 hours worth of crunching.......

I think from now on, I'm going to set up one more client than I "should" on each box, and run them on timeless, so that I can at least be doing SOMETHING if/when the cable is out......

I'm trying I'm trying ;) I just have a deadline here at work.... gotta get this bridge designed/drawn by 11/15...... I'm still working on quantities of rebar and concrete.... let alone guardrail and stone.......

you have no idea how little these people need a bridge........... but I don't pick which bridges get replaced......... this particular one has an ADT (avg. daily traffic) of 10....... 2 of which is the school bus........ we're not even putting in a temporary bridge....

I'm not trying to be whiny... just stating that I can't take the time (at work) to sneakernet because I have a deadline..... :D

Thank god for box beams..... so much easier than designing a deck..............

Check my [H]s. Something BAADDD happened to one of my borgs. No idea which one though. 227 units in two days. :eek:

Its stopped but unfortunately, a main borg, my parent's A64 is down for 2-4 weeks at least while they move house. :(

Well, the power isn't the problem anymore.... just the stupid cable.... and I refuse to install AOL or anything "free" for dialup..... I'd rather burn all my PCs :D

Next time I'll have some ready to go... I don't think ANYONE was ready for 6-8 inches of snow in October lol

Actually, I have a free account with NetZero for these situations. 10 hours per month for free and minimal ads.
 
I can hook you up with a dial up account to use temp. Nation wide.

Take a box w/ a modem, connect it and share the connection. I assume the boxen are on a LAN, might have to manually set IP's and point the gateway to the modem box.

XP does connection sharing, sucks but it could work.

county road.... state takes care of all the bridges (not privately owned) in the state..... It's hard not to replace a bridge that has beams with 100% section loss at the point of bearing...... you begin to wonder what exactly is holding it all up

Here's a couple pics for you.... This is the first bridge they built of mine (still building it)

This one was basically 90° on and 90° off.... and the school bus could barely make it.... let alone anything else..... not to mention it was a 100+ year old concrete arch (with little reinforcing)...... not to mention the flooding that's alieviated because of the increased flow area under the bridge.......

Is that dumptruck on the turnpike? It looks kind of like an overpass I go under on my trips through WV...but then again, I think that's pretty much what most overpasses on divided highways look like in WV.

I like p[H]ant0m's idea about the log (or multiple logs). It'll be much cheaper and if you spray paint it gray and silver, it'll look like one o' them fancy newfangled concrete and steel contraptions they see on their trips to the big city.
 
Civil Engineering pfffff...haha I like doing stresses and moments, I'm almost an engineer, I'm gunning for Systems design, right now one of the projects is creating a HUD built into helmets for the US Army so that no more Jessica Lynch accidents happen. The idea is that the trail will be waypointed into the HUD so that even in zero-visibility you still have navigation and distances. It's pretty cool, plus soldiers can drop beacons as additional waypoints that act as an adhoc network, but the problem is battery life for the dropped beacons.....Anyways, cool tech to help out your boys out East!

That is the Kingmont Overpass bridge near Fairmont,WV... Exit 133 or 134 on I-79... I-64 is the turnpike.... They had to heat-straighten 2 of the beams to get them within tolerance again.... and then they drilled out the ends of the cracks and welded the cracks in the web...

The thing about that accident is that the 65 year old driving the truck "felt a bump and hear a loud noise" and stopped because it felt like he had a flat tire..... of course, all 8 of the rear wheels were flat, and he was running on the set of wheels that you can raise and lower....... it's been awhile, but I think they said the pins that held the bed to the hinge were like 2" in diameter, solid steel....

Uh....where's the rest of the truck? And what the HECK was he doing driving down the highway with the bed up?

This is why I think there should be mandatory driving tests every 10 years once you hit 50 years old. I can't tell you how many times I've seen old people pull out in front of me, or nearly get in accidents at a 4-way stop because they didn't see the SIX OTHER CARS TAKING THEIR TURNS!!

Once the bed wedged between the asphalt and the beams, the force/impact sheared the axle that the bed pivoted on.... and the hydraulic piston mount...... then truck just kept on rolling...... he stopped 1/4 of a mile or so down the road.....

As for why the bed was up.... he hit the wrong button.... he was trying to do one thing, and did another.... and up the bed went...... and the BOOM......

You would think that an open bed at 70mph would help him fly OVER the bridge.

 
I've been trying to find some pics from the southern part of the state where one of these overloaded (even by the "newly accepted" weight limits of 120,000lbs) dump trucks went over a concrete slab bridge, roughly 40ft span....... bridge snapped in half and he went backwards into the creek....... I just can't find the pics..........

Yeah it's incredible what the new transports can do I mean 2250 ft lbs of torque, and thats mass torque, the pistons arrrree huge. To keep this DC related, Laidlaw trucking has satellite uplink to each (from what they told me) of its trucks that tracks its speed, time without a break, length of break, ETA, fuel, reefer haha temperature, miles travelled vs estimated, service due...ie some of the trucks had automated on-the-fly oil changes where the old oil would be pumped into the tanks and the new oil pumped in. Lots of tech in the big long haulers, now a driver may visit these boards, but this is from what I've seen from my limited experience.

OSU...I'm assuming FE is the American version of our P.Eng designation which you write an exam after you've had 2+ yrs of work experience and of course your degree.

FE = Fundamentals of Engineering test.... old EIT test, which you can take right out of college
PE = Professional Engineer's test.... which you can't take until you have 4 yrs experience (at least in WV)
