Been waiting for this for a long time as I'm a huge MMA fan. Hopefully it's more realistic this time around. Kevin Randleman's double uber kick FTW!
If they wanted to make it realistic when playing as Houston Alexander your controller should shut off whenever you're taken down.
I bet I'm a bigger fan![]()
It's a ton of fun, but it's still a little hokey. Much like the K1 games, it's far too easy to just keep throwing power shots while standing up. Overhands/head kicks interspursed with takedowns is the way to go.
On the ground, the game's also a little "off." To submit someone you have to sufficiently weaken them, meaning the ground fighters are overmatched from the start. You pretty much have to pound on someone for a while to make a submission work, and then just rating the right stick rapidly nullifies almost anything. Just like the stand-up game has a flash KO, they need that option on the mat, too. It's just hard to imagine a good grappler like D. Maia having to pound on someone to submit them. I'll have to hope in the final version they'll take that into account.
Still - it's a ton of fun. It'll never be a serious fighting game or anything, but it's addictive as hell and it's enjoyable. The commentary is actually taken from real fights. You'll note that the Shogun comments were taken straight from his 2 UFC fights (it was taken prior to the Liddel bout, obviously). Goldberg even slips up just like in real life. I'll have to wonder if Rogan will go on and on about the "rubber guard" which almost nobody has ever done anything with.
Wouldn't bet on that. I've been around in the MMA community for a looong time. Back when I was in college (more than a decade ago) I actually ran one of the first MMA sites, long before Sherdog and the UG were around.

Oh yeah? i bet im 3x bigger fan than all of you put together!!![]()
I think I'll have to challenge you both - IN THE OCTAGON!
I like the Japanese stuff...although these days I think their talent pool is pretty weak. I also follow the small regional events as well, although there's seemingly a show every week now.
I actually got interested in MMA due to the "hard style" wrestling in Japan that pre-dated the UFC and JVT events. That was sort of my first exposure to at least somewhat realistic fighting.
After that, I pretty mutch latched onto every other NHB and MMA type of event that followed. Back before the days of internet video I used to have some friends in Japan that would send me the RINGS and Pancrase videos after they happened. Now you can pretty much "find" any major event there's ever been online.
Anyway, the game's fun. That's the main thing. It's flawed, but it didn't keep me from staying up way too late last night playing around with it. With over 80 characters and the ability to create your own fighters, we'll have the ability to create a huge roster of current fighters and all time greats.
What's fun about that is actually creating the stats and then letting the CPU play out the fights.
I must be missing something. I downloaded it, picked that Chuck dude, and just button mashed my way to victory without ever having to ground fight. I fought 3 times and beat the comp (dunno difficulty, default?) in under 2 mins each time.
I'm gonna give it a go again, but it's like boxing without the gloves at the moment.
Am I the only one thinking Fedor would beat anyone in UFC?I'll have to try to create him I suppose.
I think the whole world would agree with that.
The ground game sucks. That's pretty much the issue. I really don't have any issues changing positions, and that's 1/2 the problem. The ground strikes don't really do anything (even in mount) and you can't submit someone until their stamina is gone. If you turn that meter on that shows your stamina, you realize that you're never going to submit someone in round 1. When it looks like your guy is moving on the mat, but not changing position, it's because the CPU essentially countered you by doing their own "advance." The tow cancel each other out. Stamina also plays a part. If your guy is nearly done and the opponent is fresh - it's hard to move them.
Want an annoying trick? On the mat - keep doing 360's with the right stick. Go both clockwise and counter. The game registers a boatload of inputs and you'll be changing positions left and right. Too bad you can't do anything once you get there. Having someone's back is pretty much the best position possible, but in the game it's WORTHLESS unless your opponent's stamina is gone. The opponent can literally reverse you into side pin and immediately stand-up. WTF is THAT?
