UD - HUGE Rosetta Units!

I have a total of 13 computers working the UD project. Every one of them is currently chewing on a Rosetta Unit that has taken anywhere from 56-96 hours so far, and they are around 40% done!

I have been doing this project long enough to know that these are the biggest, most intense chunks of information that my little farm has ever had to deal with! My stats are going to look pretty bad for the next few days, but when these things finally do their "power dump" with these units, I expect to blow the stats curve for the entire month, right out of the water!

Anybody else seeing these things?

 
What is the RAM usage on those suckers? I'm not running UD right now, but these sound like a challenge... :D
 
Actually their RAM requirements aren't too bad, I've got the same WU's running on an old P3 with 256mb. They are incredibly time intensive. I've had a few take anywhere from 4 to 6 days on that poor machine.
 
I have 2 of these monsters right now.

PC1: P4 1.8Ghz w/768MB @ 38% and 140 hours!

I had to say it. back on topic, if I had a billion boxen, I'd divide some of them up to UD, but right now im focusing on folding. Don't we have a commanding lead when it comes to UD?

I had several of those monster units and ended up turning Rosetta off, somthing strange with how UD works the Rosetta units but they were only pull a couple % of the CPU on my boxes (everything I have runs both UD and FAH). When they finally got turned in I didn't get any points. I haven't had that happen again since I reverted back to only running the Ligand units.

Those Rosettas are very yummy! I can attest to that when I kept switching back and forth during the "downdays of summer". On mine it takes an average of about 72 hours (across the big and small ones). So yea, seeing 96 hours and <50% is totally normal.

As for RAM usage, here's what I know. When the Rosetta's were first released it ate memory almost like the QMDs (well, exaggerated a bit here :p) People started to complain because the system swapped all the time. On average its memory profile is 100+ megs. What they did with a recent release (right before The Big Crash), is that they move that huge chunk of memory allocation to virtual memory (using VirtualAlloc I presume). So now, you will see the memory still being taken if you look at the bottom status bar in Task Manager, but you will see a much smaller "Mem Usage" and a large "VM Usage". The swapping has reduced so I was happily switching back.

So yeah, turn both LigandFit and Rosettas on if you like. Unfortunately, right now I just happened to be working on Ligands... :rolleyes:

 
I have had large Rosetta units in the past too, but these are by far the largest I have seen.

My main system is an AMD 4000+ with 2gb of memory, and as of this posting, it is 87 hours into a unit and only 61% done. In over 4 years of doing UD, that one takes the cake! Maybe I have just been forutunate(?) until now, and not gotten the really big ones.
 
Could running multiple instances of UD finish twice as much work in this instance? Is it possible to do this?

There is an unoffical SMP method for UD, which requires XP and fast user switching. If you check our FAQ, Moose put a little blurb about it in there, its just not a particularly elegant procedure.
 
This rosetta Human Proteome Folding is taking ages!!! I got 55hrs and counting on this project. And im running an A64 at 2.5! When will it end!!!!

 
ALL of the following are folding Rosetta work units right now:

2 GHz Pentium M, 1.25GB DDR2 (score: 190)
2.1 GHz AXP 3000+, 1GB DDR400 (score: 189)
P3-700, 512MB PC133 (score: 105)
K2-450, 128MB (score: 49)

I haven't earned any points in a few days because of the size of the WUs. I'm hoping for a large 10k point day if they all finish at the same time.

Crazy.


 
As of this morning, most of my boxen are still crunching away at these things. Most of them should perform a "mega-dump" in the next 24 hours. I expect there will be a noticable increase in my CPU time when these are done.
