I want to set up a web server for my website . Its a lowbudget website and I just run a blog on it and some picture hosting. Anyways I don't want to waste another 100+ dollars on a OS to run apache on so I'm wondering if I could run a reliable server on UBUNTU .

Is it easy for a first timer?

Just help me please :p
 
Yes it is easy, there are 101 howto's out there to walk the first timer through all off it.
 
Why not save yourself some $ (electricity) and go with one of those free PHP Web Hosting companies?

Nice to learn, but better to save!

I already have one of those but I want to do it myself .

Is it possible to run it Debian or a Lamp server on VMWare workstation ?
 
Debian, in my experience, is extremely reliable. It's mature, and is renown for its reliability.

Debian is one of those distributions that when you run the stable release, it is pretty much rock hard.How ever no distro can combat a lack of knowledge. True stability requires the person administering the system to know what they are doing.
 
I've been running Debian on a box for almost three years now. I've never had one single problem that wasn't a direct result of my own mistakes.

Debian has been the most stable distro I've ever used.
We are using SLES 10 at work now for mail/web, and I can't complain about them.
 
Ubuntu is based off debian. Debian is solid its only knock is they do so much testing the don't have as much cutting edge technology.

You can get to the cutting edge if you use Sid, how ever it is called Sid for a reason, it is unstable and not as well tested. (Keep in mind, the Debian release names are based on Toy Story characters, I think you can see why Sid = unstable)
