Hiya.

I've just downloaded the Ubuntu 5.10 iso, and have a question or two before I burn it to cd.

I know its an disk image, but will the cd be bootable?

Do I need to create a 2nd partition before I install or is this all taken care of at installation time?

1 - burn the iso as an image (In Nero, it's 'Burn Image', it's similar in other burning apps) and the disc will be bootable. Don't just burn the ISO as a data cd (so that the disc has the ISO file on it).

2 - If you have any unpartitioned space, it's fine and you can set up partitions during install. If you don't have free unpartitioned space, then you'll have to resize partitions either before install or during. Ubuntu 5.10 comes with NTFSResize that you can use during the install process, which allows you to resize NTFS partitions during install.

Yeah I got caught burning an iso as a file before. Doh!
 
Ok I'm now offically in the 'I tried to install linux and ended up having to reinstall Windows club!!!'

Now I'm not blaming Ubuntu, I am more than willing to hold my hand up and say my inexperience is to blame.

Here's what happened, burned iso, ran setup, repartitioned ok, installed ok, then ran into 'the grub' or something like that, which just did nothing, stayed at 0% for an awfully long time.

At this point I paniced, rebooted my machine and had a 'loading os error!'

So obviously I was wrong to reboot, but how long should the grub take to do whatever it does? Because I mean to me it looked like it died!
 
at that point, I would have attempted to reinstall Ubuntu and let it install Grub again.

Grub is a bootloader so you can boot into Winblows as well
 
Things are going from bad to worse!!!

Seems I reinstalled windows, I left 20 odd Gig of my HDD unpartitioned for linux. Now when I run setup, the partition manager doesn't automatically pick up the non-formatted partition.

I go to manual set up, at which point it shows me logical partrition #5 20 odd gig, but when I select it I get a who list of things to do to it. I guess its various ways to format the file system. Now one of these is something like setup for lvm, is that what I want or not.
 
Ubuntu actually has an automatic feature that you can use with just the free space. Try that so yo get a good swap size.

Manually:
Create your / partition (root) using ext3
create your swap partition with about 1gb
 
I became a member a couple weeks ago. Had the same exact problem, installed Ubantu got to grub and nothing. Tried LILO and nothing. After giving up I tried loading my Windows....nothing. :(
