Hello,

I am looking to set up a fanless pc based music player running a real time kernel ubuntu or other linux derivative.

I want to buy a soundcard that supports 192khz 24bit over coaxial or optical digital out to go to a DAC. The sound card would have to be fully supported (at 192khz 24bit) by ubuntu/linux without any massively complicated workarounds.

For example I have a 96khz 24bit M-audio Fast track pro external sound card but in ubuntu it only works at 44.1khz 16bit.

The fast track pro does work in full duplex at 96 kHz even on windows.

A good resource on sound cards are here: http://ardour.org/requirements.html

As a music player, why not just use usb or firewire dac directly, though? I think that the sound card is definitely unnecessary unless you need to do recording (A/D). Check out what auraliti is doing with linux MDP or possibly vortex box. I'm now using a Mytek DSD DAC and checking some of this stuff out.
