For all you alternative OS fans out there, Ubuntu 8.10 is out and available in several forms. You can get the Desktop CD version, Server Install CD, MID USB image and the Alternate install CD. Each version comes in either Intel x86 or AMD64 flavors. Grab it if you want it, try it if you haven’t.

The desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 256MB of RAM to install from this CD.

I'll wait a few days, the servers is going to be busy for a couple of days.

I grabbed it from the first link on the mirrors list, ANL.gov, at 650KB/s, was done before I even knew it. Then I grabbed Xubuntu 8.10 off the torrent at a SOLID 1MB/s... never pulled down a torrent that fast, of any kind...

Speed isn't an issue. ;)

Downloaded it during lunch today. It fixed my issue with flash blocker but now I can't get the nvidia driver to work correctly. The driver won't install correctly, gives an error when restarting, and reverts back to onboard. Ugh...

Grabbed it via the torrents....TONS of seeders, probably the quickest download I've ever had :D

I just downloaded 8.04 the other day. Are there any noteworthy improvements over that to be worth downloading the new client?

Ha, I hope they fix the wireless issues with the Broadcom 4311 that I had in 8:04.

I'm still running 7:10 on the laptop...

I'm thinking about making the switch. This might be a good time. I'll have to keep windows around for gaming though...

Man having torrents this go around is friggin awesome. 1.2MB/s for the download. Took me about 10 minutes to download the x64 version of Ubuntu 8.10. Downloading Kubuntu now as well. Much slower via the torrent versus Ubuntu itself but quickly picking up speed :D

However, I do have one issue. I can't get Ubuntu 8.10 to even boot up to the screen so that I can install it. I tried getting the ISO twice just in case. MD5 checks out. It gives me I/O errors for my hard drive. My 8.10 RC ISO though can install just fine.

I've been wanting to give Kubuntu a try over Ubuntu anyways but still...would be nice to have the option.

Once you install one you can switch to the other. There are ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, and xubuntu-desktop packages in the repository to allow you to switch (or install all three and choose the one you want at the GDM login screen)

I want to make a vmware image of my current WinXP 32 install, then wipe it and install Ubuntu 64, and run my current XP 32 install in vmware. But I need more ram first.

Unfortunately Kubuntu gives me the same issue as the Ubuntu disc. Buffer I/0 erro on device sr0. MD5 checks out. Ubuntu 8.10 RC installs without a problem. :(

Time to go visit the forums and figure out what the hell is going on.

I've already got the RC installed.. can I update it to the release version or do I have to reinstall?

using the same broadcom wireless in my laptop and 8.10 had the driver ready to use i had to just activate it

Yea, well, it didn't work for me. Not sure why.

You're not running an Nvidia 7150 by chance are you? I'm having driver problems with it as well.

People complaining about borked systems in 3...2...1... :D

I've already got the RC installed.. can I update it to the release version or do I have to reinstall?

The following commands will bring you up to speed.
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I'm not the only person having this problem after browsing the ubuntuforums.org. Doesn't matter if it's x64 or x86. Same problem for others as well.

I downloaded the 64-bit Ubuntu twice. x86 Ubuntu once and x64 Kubuntu once. MD5 across all of them check out and they all give me the same error abou the Buffer I/0 error on device sr0. :(

burn issue?

Since Windows7 seems to have ripped off KDE4, windows ppl may be more at home with Kubuntu-8.10

Not a burn issue. :(

I'm not the only person with the issue. I may try to download one of the Kubuntu DVD ISO's tonight and see how that handles versus the CD versions.

Probably not the best place to post this but can someone please explain how ubuntu. I'm been hearing a lot of stuff about ubuntu at UTD. I have a dell e1705 laptop and acer one netbook and was wondering where can I find the drivers for this OS? Is this OS base off linux? I know this OS resource management is better than windows but can run stuff like photoshop master collection, play games like half-life 2, and do video editing of any sort?

The only method I've found for dealing with the buffer I/O error is to use the alternitve install disk. Ubuntu will usually install fine with that.

Good luck!

Short answer... Yes to all those queries

Long answer:
Ubuntu is just another "flavour" of packaged linux kernel and apps
All distro's take from the same source, it just how they then package it up for the end user to use (basically what you can do on one can be done on any other)

While there are quite a few hundred distro's the majority of these are peoples pet projects or for specific hardware.
Basically Ubuntu is the primary choice for new people to linux since Canonical have done a very good job of making it user-friendly and abstracting the user away from the command line (my wife has ditched her vista install for ubuntu now since she uses the same apps in windows as she does in linux its just she prefers how things are done in linux)

Dell pick commodity (read cheap) hardware and have for quite some time picked hardware that have good linux support so the Dell machine you won't have a problem with out of the box. Likewise that netbook is also fine
The only time you may struggle with hardware and linux is if it is a custom build (with X-fi, support for Xfi still a bit flacky) ALSO if the hardware is soooo new that distro's havn't had time to roll out a new installCD to cope (one example was the
jmicron controller chips that came out between linux liveCD releases)

Windows and linux are completly different OS's and as such something written for one won't run on another (like Xbox games running on a Playstation).
Thats not strictly true since there are "compatability layers"

Photoshop is windows & mac only. BUT it does run well in linux via WINE (that compatability layer I mentioned). Also depending on what you are doing GIMP could be a better solution - if you are a professional artist then stick with Photoshop

HL2 runs very well via WINE

video editing... there are some good apps in linux but I havn't used them so I cna't comment

isn't such I/O errors normally downto BIOS reporting wrong IRQ to the kernel so it gets confused?

should be able to add a boot option to get around it for the install

I'm definitely keeping Windows around, but that said I'm going to download a Crossover demo and see how it works out: http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/

Its WINE with official support, basically. No idea if its worth it but a demo can't hurt.

Crossover was giving away its products for free as a one day promotion a couple of days ago. I downloaded it, but have yet to install it.

I'll give that a try. One thing I love about this release is they went with Torrents. Downloading ISO's at 1.2MB/s yesterday was beautiful.

Dunno, after looking around launchpad.net this was actually a bug that people saw in multiple versions of the 8.10 Alpha. Some would be running Alpha 1 and see it. Alpha 2 wouldn't have the issue but Alpha 4 would. It's very strange.

I'll give the alternative disc a shot when I get home so we'll see what happens.

If image and video editing are your cup of tea, I suggest you try Ubuntu Studio ( http://ubuntustudio.org/ ) which comes with all sorts of video, image, and audio editing tools pre-installed. Good luck :)

Linux also has its own selection of games, if you are interested, and most of the Id games have a Linux version (although I don't think the linux version of UT3 has been released - the newest would be Quake 4 and Quake Wars)

People are reporting that the alternative CD is having the same issue. People are also reporting success with the ISO after burning it at a slower speed so I guess I'll try that when I get home.

Bluetooth isn't working in 8.10, and that's both my keyboard and mouse. ;_;
I also had the I/O problems in the 8.04 version of Kubuntu (x64), so I guess that hasn't been fixed yet.

Really? I read in one of the 8.10 previews that Bluetooth had been greatly improved.

Burning the ISO at half speed worked. All my ISO's can install now. My normal is 48x for CD burns. So I burned it at 24x and it works like a champ.
