For you Linux guys, take a look at this beta review and check out some of the new features coming soon to a box near you.

As soon as Ubuntu started up I was able to select my wireless network. Occasionally in the past it has had issues recognizing my wireless card, but this time it did a great job. It managed to pull in all of the networks in the vicinity:

I snagged this, burnt it to the live cd, and thought I'd try it out on our "spare parts" media pc (MythTV looks awesome). I've never used any Linux flavor really.

First thing I did of course was try to set up the wireless card. I found the place to do it easy enough, entered the SSID, the passkey, all that crap. It gave no indication that anything wasn't working, but I couldn't browse the network or get to any webpages. After googling about ubuntu and my wireless card, I found a TWENTY STEP guide on getting it to work, which some people said worked great for them, others said it didn't, involved downloading driver files, editing parts, compiling things, and then said "meh, screw it".

For what it's worth, and this may be just a "Live CD" thing, but lots of times when I'd say, click the network menu option, nothing would happen for like a minute, then it'd pop up. Other menu options did this from time to time too.

I'd love to quit using windows, and I think I have enough technical ability to go through crazy amounts of googling and tons of steps to get it working, but I don't really have the time to fool with all of that.

When I last tried Ubuntu with 6.10 or whatever it was. It wouldnt work with the ACPI on my laptop so I couldnt dim the LCD or anything. So far only Fedora has gotten it to work. Maybe this version will ;D

I popped it on my laptop out of sheer curiosity, and I'm sorry to inform you that it's still broken   HP DV6000 is my model, fedora worked great on it too.

Well I do believe FC8 comes out in Nov so we will just have to wait for it I guess.

I have no experience with Linux (yet), but I did come across a Google video of LinuxMCE. The reason I mention it is because you mentioned liking MythTV and used it on your media PC.

Anyhow, in the video the narrator mentioned and demonstrated that LinuxMCE automatically detected the wireless card in the PC and nothing else had to be done. No hacking drivers, nothing. It just worked. Figured it might be worth a Google for ya.

Of the many distros I've played with over the last seven years Ubuntu has come closest to staying on one of my machines, with 7.04 being a very close contender.

The biggest problem for me (as usual) is graphics and networking. I find myself having to go to unusual lengths to make Ubuntu play nice with pretty standard hardware. This is not just a Ubuntu problem: with linux it's always an adventure.

I'm encouraged by the new UI for graphic set up but I'm curious to see if it's just a pretty face to the not terribly flexible 7.04 back end.

I'll wait for the final release.

I downloaded it and burned the live-cd edition to a disc and installed it. The default kernel didn't recognize my broadcom wireless card in my laptop(hp/compaq c714nr) so I just followed a 5 step guide to install the drivers and everything was good. Now, I'm trying to get those cool graphical desktop features(compiz fusion,beryl,etc...) to work. I'm a linux noob btw... It is possibly that in 2-3 yrs I won't be using windows anymore. :D

Nomikal: I think Ubuntu comes with some sort of Compiz or Beryl with it. Not sure though.

Also... Why are you using a GF2 MX400??! :p
