Ok. I want to use an external usb HD to back up my HD, so when I reformat I dont have to reload all my updates etc. Im assuming this is easy BUT ive never done it before.
Talk to me like I was 10 and run me thru the transfer of data off C drive to the external and then how to replace it to C drive after its reformatted. Im planning on upgrading my son's comp with a new MOBO,processor, memory and graphics card. I want to off load all his stuff before I reformat the Cdrive. Thanks in advance. magoo. :D

What exactly are you backing up? Every single file and folder (including OS files) or just user documents and settings? Unless you can somehow boot off of the external hdd I don't think it'd work (unless you reinstalled an OS on C or got another drive).

What I would like to do is....Transfer all his game files, AOL,all that shit except the OS to the external drive.....change out the MOBO etc,....reformat the internal drive and load the OS to the internal.....then transfer the files back to the internal (Cdrive)...does that sound reasonable???? and do-able????I just need to know the basic mechanics of how its done?? Thanks.
