U2713HM refurb issues

I just got mine from the recent 30% off sale, and it's massive! I can't seem to get it to display 2560 x 1440 via the DVI-D cable though. I have updated to the latest 14.12 drivers, and my 7870XT should be able to do up to 2560 x 1600, according to the Sapphire site. It will do 1440 in safe mode via DVI-I, but as soon as I go back to normal mode, it goes black after the windows logo (W7, 64-bit if it matters).

If I connect the HDMI cable, it works just fine in normal mode, but obviously won't go higher than 1920 x 1080. I'll probably get a displayport > mini displayport cable soon, but it should work via DVI-I as well shouldn't it?

Edit: Well I think I answered my own question. The Dell has a DVI-D input, and my card only has a DVI-I output. Is mini displayport > displayport fine, or am I looking at a graphics card update sooner, rather than later?

You need a dual link DVI-D cable for it to work, which is NOT what they include in the refurb box. That was a major complaint from people. The cable supplied works on 1080p and below. I bought a refurb, which is how I know.

I just bought a DP cable, and that is what I use now.

Thanks for the reply. Looking at the cable, the connector looks exactly like the second one down in the picture below, so it think it may actually be a DVI-D Dual Link cable.

There are lots of cables that look like dual-link cables, but actually aren't. The whole thing is really sleazy.

Suffice it to say, if it can't do 2560x1440 without some issues, it isn't dual-link.

Oh, that is shady. So, it doesn't matter that the 7870XT only has a DVI-I output, as long as the cable is dual-link DVI-D? Can someone recommend a good cable?

I also need to hook up my old monitor that only has DVI. I'm thinking I could get an HDMI > DVI adapter, or mini-displayport to DVI? I plan on getting a new graphics card within the next 6 months, so I want something not too pricey.

Edit: I'm signing up for the free Prime trial, so I found these two on Amazon, based on the reviews. Any opinions on them?

Ah, well, you need to look at the output. Use that pin diagram you have posted above there. Your video card should have all of the pins for a dual-link DVI-D port, which, if you look at it, will also fit a dual-link DVI-I port (the only difference is four additional pins around the flat pin for DVI-I, if I recall, this carries analog signal for when you use a DVI->VGA adapter).

Both of those cables should work fine for your needs, however, since you mentioned mini displayport - if your video card has mini displayport outputs, you can just get a mini displayport to regular displayport cable, like this:

And use that on the U2713HM, then just connect your other monitor directly via DVI.

mini DP to DP cable, problem solved, unless Google pulling up the wrong card..

don't even bother with DVI.

Just for info on the monitor:

Just got mine in .... Was surprised to see it come with literally every cable, DVI / VGA / HDMI / Mini DP to DP (or is it vice/versa?)

Anyhow, very happy so far, got it in, no dead pixels, it is perfect and I love it so far!

That was my original plan, but somehow I got to overthinking the issue. Just ordered the mDP to DP cable, so I should be good, thanks to all.

One last question; the screen is flawless, except for a few smudges near the middle. They almost look like fingerprints, but don't come off when I clean the screen. I can only see them in good lighting, and definitely don't notice them when the screen is on. I don't think they are anything to worry about, but I just wanted to make sure they weren't a symptom of a deeper problem.

I got the displayport cable today, and I'm good to go at 2560x1440. I just found a stuck pixel (grrr); it's black so I don't really notice it unless I'm looking for it. When I consider this and the smudges I mentioned above, it makes me think I should maybe contact Dell. Is this typical of their refurbs, or should I expect better?
