Guys,

I need some help in deciding which monitor to buy: the Dell U2713H or the LG 27EA83. My main activity is graphical work (photo editing in particular). At the moment I own a 2410, but the uneven screen tinting and backlight drift with temperature is bothering me. Wide gamut is a must, so no discussion about that.

Disadvantages of the Dell:

- Hardware calibration doesn't work and has very limited compatibility
- Horrible overdrive artifacts

Advantages of the Dell:

- No PWM
- Some form of uniformity compensation

Disadvantages of the LG:

- PWM
- Bad factory calibration (?)
- No uniformity compensation

Advantages of the LG:

- Better implemented hardware calibration
- Less agressive overdrive

At the moment I'm leaning slightly towards the LG but I'm scared of the PWM backlight dimming. Does anyone has first hand experience with this? Is it really bad?

Which one should I go for and why?

I've had my wide gamut LG for a couple months. I don't notice the PWM. They both use the same screen but it seems LG picks the best ones to put in their monitor. Mine is perfect, excellent factory calibration. As with all IPS panels, you get up close and off center you will notice a bit of light bleed from the far edge.

I believe Dell may have a better warranty and return policy but you need it for more quality control issues. I believe the LG works better. You may be able to pick up the Dell on sale for less money. The LG rarely goes on sale anywhere except newegg. The LG USB hub is weak for anything more than keyboard/mouse/printers, dunno about the Dell.

Both can be great monitors.

The 27EA83D's tested by both PRAD & Overclock.ru had mediocre Adobe RGB & sRGB modes. The Adobe RGB & sRGB modes on the U2713H I tested suffered from a strong green tint and red under coverage (users have found this as well), but other review units have been fine.

Once calibrated using OSD adjustments (RGB adjustments are only accessible on both in a mode which uses the displays native gamut) and ICC profiling (you will need to buy a spyder 4 eltite or i1 display pro) both models should be fine when used properly in color managed programs.

The U2713H is the lesser of two evils for still images since both LG's reviewed have been mediocre and the U2713H does not use LED PWM Dimming.

If you plan on only relying on the factory settings then both are scary purchases.

Hmm...seems I have no access to that prad.de review. I don't care that much about the factory calibrated modes. What is worrying me is the non-functional hardware calibration of the U2713H (at least in terms of white point). How is the 27ea83 handling this? Maybe someone who has the prad.de review can chime in? I do have access to many different colorimeters and spectros to calibrate (hardware) and profile (ICC software) the displays so a fully functional hardware calibration would be good.

Many thanks!

I hear prad.de tested an initial release international version LG with older and defective firmware (bad LG). You want to be carful when looking at reviews, some you just can't figure out. The USA LG versions all have updated firmware which performs much better. Sample of one, but my LG performs much better than my neighbor's Dell even with still images. Mine is used mostly for video.

He's returning the Dell for an LG, but you may have different needs. These two monitors are the best you can get in this price range, but they are only $700-$800 monitors after all.

PRAD reviewed the revision which has lower input lag. It's adobe sRGB and sRGB modes were just as mediocre as the older version reviewed by overclock.ru

I've also bought the monitor for design work. The worst part is that I have contacted LG's warranty support on May 28th. They told me that within 24-48 hours I will receive shipping labels via email. After 10 days of NOTHING, I have contacted them again on June 6. They apologized for the delay, assigned me another case number, and again told me that I will receive the shipping labels within 24-48 hours.

Today is June 14. Not exactly 24-48 hours, and still have not heard anything from them.

So in case you decide to buy this monitor and - if by any chance - it will develop an issue, you better prepare for a long battle to get warranty service from them.

Guess i can count them out. Dell is so much better in that department albeit their factory settings sucks bollocks.

Tried both and cannot recommend either though if you had to pick one, I'd take the Dell for the support and no-PWM/better stand. The LG is a cheap attempt to make huge margins by compromising on quality : this screen has a PWM frequency of 130 Hz!!! My ZR2440W, in comparison does 380 Hz and the U2312HM does north of 300 Hz as well. Anything less than 280-300 Hz on LED screens is asking for potential trouble and eyestrain.

The U2713H would have been my dream screen if Dell ever got their UC feature correctly in all the modes esp. in sRGB mode.

Having tried nearly all WQHD screens out there, I have give up and settled on a ZR2440W + U2312HM setup for now.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll go for the Dell. Regarding the banding problem that was mentioned here: other reviewers have seen this as well. As it changes with the backlight setting I'm pretty sure it's interference from the high power PWM LED drivers on the low power LVDS LCD driver.
