U2311H vs. 2209WA

I've recently been thinking that I should forget the wide gamut hype for now and narrow my choices down to a good standard gamut IPS monitor. After looking at models, I think my best bet would be one of these 3 choices:

1)Dell 2209wa
2)Dell u2311h
3)NEC EA231WMi

I like the idea of a 16:9 FHD resolution like the u2311h's screen has but I have read about it's various tinting/backlight problems that don't occur with the 2209wa. I don't really know anything about the NEC monitor but I'm leaning more towards one of the Dells.

I'm going to be using this monitor with a 13 inch unibody Macbook Pro. Wouldn't the U2311h knock out the need to get a display port to dvi converter but require me to get a displayport to mini displayport converter?

Which monitor would be the best all around choice?

I've used the search feature and read a lot about the u2311h and it's backlight issues which worry me and I've read a lot about the 2209wa and it's many followers. I haven't really seen a thread comparing the two which is why I made one.

Duh I'm a "n00bie" it's my first post.

The 2209WA has better viewing angles but lower resolution and no Displayport.
Also the WA is 16:10, I like height better than width. Hopefuuly I can get my hands on three U2410 under 1K some time in the future.

I'm a huge Dell monitor fan, but they can do better QC on their new UltraSharp monitors.

I currently use the 2209WA, which I bought before the 23" models came out. If I had to choose again of these units, I would choose the U2311H because it is probably going to have better contrast. It also uses a mere half the power of the 2209WA, which is a sure sign that the U2311H is the more modern unit. I keep that in mind when I hear about the reduced viewing angle of the U23.

Tinting is not unknown to the 2209WA. Thankfully, my unit has negligible colour variation across the screen, as well as noticeable but respectable brightness uniformity and no pixel errors. My 2209WA has been very kind to me in the 3200 hours that I've used it. The power LED even had the decency to mysteriously cease working so I don't have to put tape over it. :D

What do you intend to use it for?

I use 2209WA at work and love it for that

I use U2311h at home and love it for games, movies, and a bit of design work.

Just weigh the pros and cons; you'll need to decide for yourself.

Nec- Pretty much the same as the U2311H but better QC and more expensive
2209WA- Better viewing angles, smaller screen, lower resolution
U2311H - Some claim it's response time is a little faster than the nec (so better for gaming), some QA issues

Sounds like you want a 16:9 monitor. So I'd definitely go with the U2311H becasue it is cheaper (on sale at dell) and you can send it back and get a new one if you're having tinting issues. I bought mine about a month ago and it has very minimal tinting and zero backlight bleeding. It is a very good monitor and I'm considering buying two more. My brother has the nec EA231WMi and they both perform pretty much the same.

I will be using it for photography mainly. If the U2311h really is just a better 16:9 version of the 2209wa than it seems to be the obvious better choice. But I'm not sure if it could be a worse choice in any way due to it's backlight/tinting issues that many complain about.

The NEC has the same panel as the U2311, but everyone I know says NEC has better QC. I personally got a nearly flawless U2311h, but some people don't. All 3 of the monitors are great, but the Dell's are the only 2 on your list I've had any real experience with and I'm very happy with both.

Just recently bought a U2311. I was lazy and didn't bother taking advantage of returning it until i got a perfectly flawless monitor. I received the first one that was sent to me. The tinting was minimal, the color uniformity was slightly off, and there is some light bleeding.

But with all due respect...even with these "deformities" I love the monitor enjoying every second of it. I use dual HP2475W at work...and I have to say....this is a way better monitor to come home to. IMO.

No one can post a reivew?

The dell U2311H is currently the best consumer grade IPS panel. It has the best Color Presets, highest contrast ratio/lowest black depth, and is very responsive. The 2209WA is marginally faster then the U2311H which in turn is considerably faster then the NEC. Quality Control can only be descirbed as poor for these, however a few people on here seemed to have lucked out while others had to excahnge their Dell/NEC's 3 times.

I would go with a monitor with a wider color gamut and better viewing angles than the U2311H for professonal work.
The U2410 would be the better choice. Better greys, 110% color gamut and H-IPS.

I've decided to go with a standard gamut monitor because I'm in college which makes my budget very low and I am mainly using it for putting pictures on the web which doesn't require a wide gamut at all. I may get a wide gamut monitor in the future when color management in applications supports them better and when I might plan to start printing some pictures.

yup just ordered one on sale along with a mini displayport to displayport adapter. Hopefully I won't have any backlight problems.
