The U.S. government wants to create a secure messaging service? Will they have to build a backdoor into the program so that other U.S. agencies will have direct access to it or will they be exempt? ;)

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), an agency within the Department of Defense historically known for creating the Internet itself, has published a call for companies to submit proposals to build a robust messaging platform that the military could use for secure communication of everything from intelligence to procurement contracts. "Troops on the ground in denied communications environments would have a way to securely communicate back to HQ and DoD back office executives could rest assured that their logistics system is efficient, timely and safe from hackers," according to the DARPA proposal.

I thought the last part about if they are successful, they may want to "commercialize the platform". Now, who is going to buy a secure messaging app from the US gov't?

So the quick version is.. from what we have seen lately.

1. The "government" a.k.a. "The Benefactor" wants a secure messaging/communications program. And one day, they may be nice enough to turn it into a consumer product. Everything on this system will of course be completely open and accessible by "The Benefactor"
2. The lowly plebs are being pushed towards not being allowed to have secure messaging/communications.

Any other government who want's their military to talk with our military. We sell rifles, tanks, and airplanes to allies, heck sometimes to enemies, why not communications.

actually most of the tech is really limited that is why your os says export rules on it, even red hat has those on it. as to the last messaging system they developed... your using it right now to see this message...

You would be very mistaken.

They have developed several over the last few decades specifically for Military purposes and they never saw commercial use. Some were formatted messaging tools, others had their own special purposes.

Have you heard of terms like JANAP 128 and USMTF ?

So I was wondering what kind of crappy denied communications environment still allows communications and it appears to be related to this: Sec. 342 Report on Joint Strategy for Readiness and Training in a Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Denied Environment.

As for having the app delete the messages, aren't there tons of workarounds for saving snapchats?
