TX650 overmatched for GTX580?

Desktop was a i7-920 (not OC'd) with a Radeon 4850, couple of SSDs, couple of 7200rpms, couple of opticals, and was running OK with a TX650 power supply. I upgraded to a GTX580 (love it!) and am having issues... the nVidia driver is crashing with increasing frequency under load. Turning up the fan or down the GPU clock helps a bit. I'm guessing my 12 month old 650W power supply is finding itself overmatched? Should I swap in something more powerful, or explore whether the card is bad?

Unless the PSU is defective, it should have absolutely no trouble with that load. Since you say that raising the fan speed helps a little, that leads me to believe you're dealing with a heat issue, not a power issue.

I'm running a Core 2 quad system with a GTX580 on a HX620 (couple years old now) and it's perfectly fine running full tilt (for folding) 100% of the time all day every day. I'm with Zero82, either your PSU is defective or it's a heat issue.

I agree with one of the replies. You did not specify which case you are using. Many reused old cases provide insufficient airflow for any newer CPUs and GPUs. Power is not the issue here; GPU overheating is.

Just for the heck of it check your 12V rail voltage in HWmonitor or if you have one a multimeter would be better.

Make sure you check both idle and load.

Thank you all for the feedback. The issue was draw off a socket - I had another desktop, a receiver, a pair of 27" displays and a wide format printer all riding off the same socket. I reorganized and the problems appear to have stabilized.

Yeah, I need to do that, just not satisfied with many of the units on the market.
