#1. My friends father has an old like 500MHz for his office PC, and its killing them, always hanging up and slower than Christmas. I took it and reformatted it (its on old Gateway) and reinstalled everything, but its still slow as can be. So I told them I would attempt to pirce a new one. Well, I have been out of the loop for a bit on new stuff, but here is what I come up with.

Code:
512MB Corsair Value Select PC3200 = $81.00
Asus A7V400-MX MB = $51.00
Antec P4 400Watt PSU = $53.50
AMD 2600+ Barton 333/512 = $95.00
Right around $300 after S&H from the Egg. I plan to salvage the 3-5GB (I forget what size), the CDRW, the Zip Drive, the Floppy, & the DVDRom from the Gateway machine, oh and the case, thus the MX board. They currently are running windows 98 se, oh joy; I think we shall 'upgrade' them to win2k or XP.

Opinions on the above for just an office PC? Or suggestions otherwise.

#2. As a frequent visitor to these forums, and an adive given and suggestor in the past, what would be the odds of putting a sub forum in this forum for System Suggestions, or System Reviews or something similar, that way when people need to ask questions about a system they are building and such, they can post in there and there only. Just a thought.

you need to get a new harddrive. Honestly, the 3-5GB is gonna slow you down REAL bad compared to a cheap 40GB or even an 80GB 8MB cache for a couple bucks more.

^yup

That old thing is prob a 5400 rpm drive with barely any cache at all

besides, if you plan on installing XP, that drive would be full after a few weeks of normal operation.

Oh glad y'all mentioned that I hadn't even thought about that being an old HDD. See this is why I ask questions lol.

I'd suggest posting this in "Forum Help and Feedback" where Q's like this are answered by folks that can make changes if there's enough interest. This or a PM to your local mod is the preferred way to provide feedback. It's generally considered off topic for G[H]......

Thanks - B.B.S.
