Two power supply or one?

Hi,

I'm building a new system, i'm waiting to see the new DX10 cards from ATI to make the best choice between them and NVIDIA... Anyway getting to the point! From what i've heard those new card will be power hungry... a lot!!! So i was wondering what should i do, get a really powerful one to drive a full system with a Crossfire/SLI, or get a "normal" one and those new 5.25inch drive bay power supply from Thermaltake http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Power/PurePower/w0130/w0130.asp , one per card. The reason why i'm asking is i want it to be as cool as possible, and was wondering if a normal power supply with two small would create less heat than a big one?

Also, i'll probably go with the Silverstone TH07 Case, which can accept 2 power supply, how can i plug two power supply in it( i guess i wont plug them both on the mobo, but the second ones needs to power up with the system also..). And will it need two power cables outside the case or only one will provide them both? Is this worth doing(with what is mention above)? This part confuse me...

Thanks!

I'd recommend One power supply over Two. What is your budget?

overall one PS is a better idea. Unless you are looking into those new ones from Antec the linked ones they are going to use in the p190.

Budget isn't a worry (unless you speak about a 1k power supply lol)

cannot find what you are talking about!?!

I will have a SLI/Crossfire with a 8800 or the ATI DX10 card coming soon.. so i need lots of power(rumors are saying the new ati card will need 250w +/- .... if they are truth)

they take two of their neo power supplies and link them, one is just for your GPU's the other powers the system. They are not redundant, rather two that are coming together to give you like 1000+ watts

search around for the P190 there is info out there.

yeah found it, with the case i was talking about the wiring to do it comes with it... That's pretty much what i want to do, since does video card are power hungry... Two small psu would make less noise, but will they make more heat?

anyone has tried those new 5.25 drive bay power supply?

Sorta off topic: I just got an 8800gtx, and I'm like a high-end uber-finicky person. If anything glitches at all, I notice. If there's a slowdown in the least, I notice. Any-ol-ways, unless you're going to turn on vertical sync or something, there's no way you'll be able to tax these cards for a while. Get the SLI mobo, get a buff PSU, but only buy one card for now. Probably save you $150, and won't hurt your performance at all. When DX10 comes out, buy a second one. I may be wrong, but I really fail to see how two of these would do anyone any good.

thanks!

But i'm still uncertain, two smaller psu would make less noise, but would they create more heat than a bigger one?

Anyone tried the new 5.25inch bay psu from thermaltake??

I would think one big psu would create less noise than two not so big psu's, since it's shown that two identical fans, spinning at the same speed, create about 3 db more. That, and a big psu which is capable of high output, but not loaded up, it won't create a lot of heat. Or noise, since it's nowhere near it's max output.

I'd skip a bay PSU. One good psu is more than enough.

IF you're going top end, sli g80 / r600, a ton of drives, then try a Silverstone OL-1kw, Zeus 850, Zeus 750, Strider 750, PCP&C Silencer 750, Seasonic M12-700, Seasonic S12-EP 650, or the Corsair HX 620 with appropriate connectors.

thanks for the info!
Really hesitating between the Silverstone TJ07 or the Lian-Li PC-V2000BplusII for my case... And since i will have at least 4 HD, 2 optical, SLI/Crossfire, the final choice depends also if i take single or dual psu... will need power! can one power supply do the job greatly?

all the power supplies are good choices. the Silencer 750 will be very quiet.

You should put a lot of thought into your case, You should make sure everything will fit, but also have enough cooling on it. Wire management is key too.

well i decided for the Lian Li PC-V2000B, the cooling is excellent(on a review it was tested against another case which is recognize for it's good cooling(forgot the model) and the overall system temp was 8 degrees Celsius less in the Lian Li) and i can buy a dual PSU bracket for the case, so i've got the best of two world :D

The case is really big, everything will fit for sure ;) (could probably ear my echo in it lol

now i'm just stupidly waiting for ATI to put out some DX10 to know if i go with ATI or NVIDIA, after that the mobo, ram, power supply. going crazy waiting :(

so pretty much every body suggest me to get one really powerfull PSU instead of two small?

Try the Silverstone Olympia 1kw. It's a single railed 80a psu.. It might ramp up a bit on the noise, but no louder than most other psu's. Plus, it's not extremely expensive.

Well PCP&C has long been known as one of the most stable units on the market.
I know they are $$$$ but, 500-600 on a gpu isn't cheap either.
