I have a windows xp machine with two nics in it. Is there a way to specify all of the internet traffic to go over only one of them? I'd like to have all of the internet traffic on one card and then have the other set aside for vmware traffic.

Just leave the gateway IP blank for the one that is not supposed to have internet access....

control panel > network connections > at the top there is an advance settings... then there is a thing wherre you can set the order for the devices

You could also use a different network address for the second NIC. For example, if your gateway is 192.168.0.1, if you use an IP from the 10.X.X.X range (which are also private, non-Internet IPs) on your second NIC, it will not be able to communicate with your gateway because the network ranges are different.

yea but it would still try to, which would slow shit up a lot... you need to set the order in advanced settings

There should be no slow down at all. Unless you have a route set up between the two NICs, the one NIC will not try to communicate with the other NIC because they are on different networks. In other words, the only way they will communicate is if the Windows box was set up to route between the two NICs and if that's not done, then there will be no attempts from one to talk to the gateway on the other.

BTW, I'm not discounting your solution at all.... it might work fine using what you suggested as well. I am merely clarifying that two NICs with two different network addresses will not talk to each other without some sort of routing set up between them.

my mobo has 2 nics and i tried it both of the other ways... and it would always like lag out or something weird.. it never workd till i fixed the priority in the advanced settings... i dono

There may be some other underlying issue with your test setup. I've done it in the past a couple times in a couple different contexts and it works as advertised. Again, I'm not discounting your solution or your findings, but I haven't encountered the same problems you're describing.

thanks, I think setting the order is the way I'm going to do it.. Since both cards will need to be able to access the internet. Its just that I want one to do it from in windows, and one to do it from within the vmware virtual machine.
