Two more 2290WAs or ???

Hi guys.

I currently own and use a Dell 2209WA for my main PC RIG. I original purchased it because I liked the performance (input lag) and was satisfied enough with how the e-ips panel worked on this Monitor. So far I've loved every minute I've had it. But I'm wanting to go Tri Monitor now or a larger Screen. Sadly though, some of my fave games (Starcraft 2 and Civ 5) do not work on multiple display setups. So that has me partially wanting to upgrade to a larger screen. But then I run into those screens either have things I don't like (poor input lag/AG Coating, or of course price).

So I'm needing some awesome [H] advice =D

(Also Sig is wrong, I have a 6950 now)

Should I go with two more 2209WAs for a Tri Setup. Go with another model for Tri Setup. Or go big 24" plus. I'd like to stay with an IPS panel as I'm slightly spoiled I think now. But for the right larger screen, since I only play games, I might be able to live with a TN Panel. I just don't know if I'd be happy with a Tri Setup without IPS without having the better viewing angles. This needs to stay under 1k and can take into account I can get at least 200$ for the Dell towards new setup.

My main use is gaming. Everything else is a bonus after that. (I dabble in photoshop, why I'd like to stay IPS but not needed)

I'd get something like the 3007wfp.

Seems like a bigger screen would work well for you.

Can you use a 30" and two other monitors next to it in portrait mode for an Eyefinity setup?

If all you play is SC2 and Civ4, get the 30". If you play Bad Company 2 or any other games that utilize eyefinity/surround, go with triple screen.

You can't go wrong either way. It isn't like you aren't playing SC2/Civ4 on just one 2209wa right now anyway, right?

Make sure 3 2209was would fit on your desk; mine overhangs the sides by a couple of inches.

I'm running 3 of the dell 2209wa's in portrait on the monoprice 3 way articulating arms and it is quite a treat. My main use is fps gaming, browsing, and programing so the setup is perfect for me, however for you since you play games that don't benefit from eyefinity and photoshop I would say a single large screen may be the route for you. I will say this there is only 2 different setups i would prefer over 3 of these and that is a PLP setup which would cost a lot to do with matching IPS screens and not work for gaming almost at all or 5x1 portrait of the 2209wa. In all routes you will end up happy but keep in mind it will be cheaper to go with 3 2209wa's.

I play black ops and other games, but yeah, RPGs and RTS games are my favorite. I have a huge L-Shape desk, so I've got the real-estate. Problem is, there's not many 30" screen to pick from that are worth it.

I'm in a very similar position and have been lurking here and doing research for the last month trying to figure out what to do next. I have 2x2209WA's and a shiny new shader-unlocked 6950. My original plan had been to go with an HP ZR30W, but I lost out in the panel lottery and got one with a really annoying buzz. It went directly back to B&H.
While I had it, the single larger screen definitely was better for photo manipulation and SC II, but I found it was wholly incompatible with my working style. Multiple screens are significantly more useful for work, which is a majority of what I do. I've been thinking that 3x24@1920x1200 would be a nice middle ground, but everything I read about the currently available 24's implies that they are also a panel lottery, with some pretty bad examples. All in all, I'm stumped. Very tempted to just pick up one or two more 2209WA's at this point.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. The other options that aren't two more 229WA's, its panel lottery. AG coating doesn't bother me like some, but when people say its really aggressive it has me worried a tad. And I'm not buying into the whole LED thing right now. Unless its a full RGB-LIT LED screen and those are really pricey. But I know if I did a tri setup, I'd need a really good mount or three separate arm mounts. Since half the games I play run better in portrait and the other half in landscape. And then a few will have to be on a single monitor like Civ 5 and SC2.

In the aspect of mounts for 3 screen setups you basically have 5 choices.

1.Ergotron stand that cost around $300

2.Chief stand that is around $300 as well

3.Build your own using plumbing/electrical pieces from hardware store. $40-100

4.TykeSupply triple stands which if your screens are bigger than 20 inch you have to deal with the straight arm version only pretty much and not the highly movable one. $50-90

5.MonoPrice 3 way articulating C-clamp or wall mount arms for $60 dollars or so for 3 of them.

I went with option 5 after tons of research and unless you got money to burn or don't need to move your screens at all it is about the most economical choice especially if your not a do it yourself person with building your own custom stand.

Thanks for the Stand suggestions. Monoprice would probably be the way I go.

I was almost set on just getting a single 27" + screen but was discouraged from the current available options. But I'm currently winning a few bids on ebay on the 2290WAs, so if I get those for a decent price looks like that's what I'm headed towards. Just bothers me a few of the games I love like Civ 5, will still be played on a single smaller screen.

Very interested in your stand experiences. I tried 2 of the Monoprice desk mounts and wasn't happy with them. I couldn't get the bezel's level or even consistently, and once mounted, adjusting was not easy. Do you find that it's pretty easy to go from LLL to PPP and get everything lined up acceptably using the wall mount arms?

Well I lost the bids. I'm actually at work and lucky enough to be allowed to use my laptop here. But when a call comes in, takes priority. Sniff, I hope their happy I got their internet working. So unless I can pick up another two of these for the right price, I'm back at looking at a single monitor. Though I wanted bigger, now I'm looking at the ASUS PA246Q, but waiting to find any info on its input lag and AG coating.

Welp! Its decided then I guess lol. I made an offer to someone on ebay who had them new in box. Made an offer and got two of them at $200 each. Wish I had made lower offer! hehe

I'll post some Pics once I get them setup, hopefully they're in next week! =D

If it wasn't for this deal and it costing me the least out of the options I was weighing. I think I probably would have gone for a 30". Down the road if I ever get to not liking this setup, that will probably be my next move to monitor choices. I just love the low input lag on the 2209WA and at least 'think' it will help with Eyefinity.

Hate to bump the thread again, but. Since the 2209WAs don't have native DP support, what's a good active dp adapter to get? I tried going over the 2009WA and had a hard time shifting through the pages heh. The one I did find mentioned, was back in 09 and was curious if there were any better options for monitors without native DP. Sorry if another thread has this discussed already.

well the way i accomplished an acceptable level of adjustment at least to me was using a laser level and very careful drilling of the initial brackets as this would only make things worse if they were off at all. The next thing I've done is really wrench the adjustment allen screws as tight as possible so they are very stiff to move. I then took some rubber strips that i made a bit shorter than the monitors so when i adjust them snap them on to make the bezels line up just right. It definitely isn't the most elegant or easy solution however I can switch between landscape and portrait pretty easy. In future when I move from a quad monitor setup to a hex I may go with a high end stand.
