Two issues; fan related?

I think that these two issues are at least somewhat related. I have some older, thrown together computer at work. It has integrated video, and at times the fan will spin up like a mofo. I'm talking so loud it sounds like a damn airplane is about to take off (seems to hit around 3000+ RPM).

Part of me says to do two things.

1. Get an aftermarket card. I work in graphic design, and while it's not overly taxing, there are times when it can be.PNY VCG84512D3SXPB GeForce 8400 GS 512MB

2. Get an aftermarket cooler & thermal paste. Thermaltake CL-P0326

Would this be the best course of action?

Yes. I'm ASSuming that CPU and vid fan were one and the same.

Not quite, 2 separate components. You said you have integrated video, so I doubt it has a fan on it. Sounds more like the CPU fan going berserk, are you getting any beeps or warning from the system about CPU overheating? Can you provide us your system specs?

I don't hear any beeps, offhand. It will spin up. I can do something as simple as play a youtube video and it causes that (on a higher res setting). Or when starting first thing in the morning. Offhand, the computer may be as old as 6 years. Trying to squeeze some more life out of it.

Rig is a P4, 3.0 Ghz. 3GB RAM. (May be Dual core?).
Board is an Asus P5GD1-VM

You can try to edit the fan profile under the BIOS and see if that does anything. You could try updating the BIOS. Try a different CPU FAN slot. You could also remove the thermal paste and applying fresh paste. Swap out the CPU fan for another.

I'd suggest you start simple and clean out the heatsink on the CPU, it could well just be dust buildup is restricting airflow such that it's causing heat buildup which causes the fan to crank up higher and higher.

Might not sold anything but it will only cost you a couple blasts of compressed air so it's worth trying before spending money to try other solutions.

I'll do both of these, but it's done it for a while. At this point, I'd almost liek to do it just to quiet the damn thing down. It's pretty audible.

Some generic, rinky dink one. It has case fans and the like, but it's defnitely nothing special.

Well I ask, because for $30 you can get a significantly better cooler.

Much better cooler for the money, but it wont fit any just any case.

Assuming cleaning out the heatsink doesn't solve the problem.

There should be enough room in it. I'll double check it on Monday.
