Hey guys, trying to get my AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition to work in my old box. The motherboard is a Asus M2N68-LA NARRA3, the new chip dropped right into the slot perfectly, everything boots up fine and seems to be faster BUT, in my system information it is saying I'm running AMD processor model unknown 803mhz... What's up with that?? I looked for a BIOS update and from what I can tell I have the most current version (5.14). I guess if it's not broke then don't try to fix it, but I'd like it to read out the 3.2GHz that it should...

And another issue, kind of related, well the chip I am trying to run in my old box came out of another box that I have which is a little nicer, but I can't seem to get it working. The motherboard in that one is a Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3. When I attempt to turn the PC on all i hear is the power supply making a very high pitch noise, almost so high frequency that you can't even hear it at all, nothing else happens. I noticed when I wiggled the 24-pin power plug the CPU fan kicked on momentarily and the tone of the buzz from the PS changed a bit then nothing again. This is a brand new board that has NEVER been used. The problem seems to be in the 24-pin EATX Power connector on the board itself, kind of at my wits end here, very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a ton [H]!

I believe that Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition is a 125W chip. According to Asus forums regarding the M2N68-LA NARRA3 motherboard:

http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?board_id=1&model=M2N&id=20071107104435468&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

Narra3 supports X2 up to 5600+ up to 89 watt Socket AM2 Processor (currently AMD Athlon™ X2 6000+) AND X4 up to 9600+ up to 95 watt Socket AM2+ Processor (currently AMD Phenom™ X4 9600+)

Keep in mind that was a post from 2009'ish... But if this is correct, that CPU won't work properly, ie. at full speed and no CPU >95W will work correctly.

try turning off cool'n'quiet? almost sounds like its defaulting to its minimum speed.

hey if you can't get it working I have a perfect running regor 245 (65w) cpu that will do a pretty impressive OC, maybe we could work out a trade or something

edit- as for your 2nd problem i'd check for any possible metal touching where it shouldn't, loose screw, etc...also make sure your cmos reset jumper is in the proper run position and all other jumpers are set to default. remove all peripherals/drives and test with only psu/mobo/cpu/ram. reseat your cpu and ram as well as any power connectors, HTH.

Thanks guys, I was actually hoping there might be a bios update that is available that would allow this cpu to run correctly?

Where do I find the cool n quiet option?

And I may be open to consider trades if I can't get it working...

Any input on my other problem?

if its american megatrends bios its probably in the second menu heading from the left, under something like "advanced cpu features"

bios update might help but it could be a limitation of the board's power grid. actually that looks like an HP OEM Asus board, I do not expect that board will support 125W since 1. it's a geforce 6150 chipset and 2. they usually come with something like an Athlon 64 x2 3800+.

from HP http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c01080282#N116:
Processor upgrade information
Socket type: AM2
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
Athlon 64 X2 with Dual Core technology up to 5600+ (up to 89 watt)
Athlon 64 less than 4000+
Sempron less than 3800+

I actually have one of those A64 X2 3800+ cpu's too if you are interested. Also try bios-mods.com there may be something there you can use to support your cpu.

Thanks, this cpu seems to be running faster than the cpu that I took out which I believe was a 2.4ghz, and it still works fine so I guess I don't need a trade. Ultimately I would like to get my other box motherboard figured out so I can put this phenom in that board and the old chip back in this one.

Update: I took the board out of the case and tried booting it up on a piece of cardboard as recommended and it kicked on, so clearly it was shorting out in the case, but I can't seem to get it to post. The hard drives sound like they kick on but I get nothing, no beeps or anything, hmm..?
