Two HDDs = Worse performance?

Hello all,

When I first built this PC, I knew little of hard drives at the time and frankly didn't think it mattered what I got as long as it was SATA, 7200RPM and either Seagate or WD. That being said, I grabbed a Seagate Barricuda (ST32503310AS) 7200.10 250GB Hard Drive, which I've read is actually a horribly slow drive, but it seemed to get the job done and has lasted me for 6 years of faithful and reliable service.

The time eventually came when I ran out of space and grabbed another Seagate drive which failed spectacularly. I decided to try my luck with Western Digital and never looked back. I got myself a 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black drive (Specs). At first I planned on using this on purely a backup drive, but when I got my hands on Windows 7 for the first time, I had to try it out on the WD drive and fell in love with Windows 7. So it's been my main drive ever since.

Now here's the problem. Occasionally, I'll go to load something from my current (C: ) drive (The Western Digital) like say, opening the recycle bin. I'll double click the Recycle Bin shortcut on my desktop and.... Nothing. I'll here a little motor spin up inside my tower (presumably the Seagate spinning up) and wait around 2-3 seconds and then suddenly Recycle Bin will load. The thing is, this happens way more often than I feel it should, and even more strange is that this happens even when I'm accessing data that isn't stored on the D: drive to begin with. Why on Earth is my secondary drive spinning up when there's no need to access it in the first place? This leads to very annoying load times for things that should be nearly instant. I have a much better understanding of how hard drives work since 2006 but I'm a little confused as to why this is happening. I know that Seagate drive is old, but is that seriously the problem, or am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance,
Alcolawl

I have the same symptom when I leave my external 3TB drive connected for too long. It will spin down, then spin back up when I try to access any portion of the file system (even just Computer). Hotcrandel hit the nail on the head; don't let the drive spin down or power off. Check advanced power options under the control panel, perhaps even create a custom power scheme. Alternatively, if you're using the WD Black as main and have no need for that Seagate 250GB drive attached, disconnect it.

Also, contrary to what you read, I've been very happy with my Seagate drives from the 7200.x series. Currently I have a pair of 7200.11 1TB drives in RAID0 as my 'gaming drive' and can completely saturate my SATA3 bus. The only way I'll see more performance is if I switch to SATA6 and get an SSD.

TLDR - Advanced Power Options, Hard Disk, Turn off hard disk after -> Never
