two GT240 differences

there's two EVGA gt240 that looks almost identical, so i'm just curious as to what the differences is besides the PCB color of green vs black. is it because of revision differences because of any bugs between the two?

Anyone knows? User feedback has not been good. I got the Gigabye GT240 DDR5 for $43 AR and Bing last week.
 
one is a reference card and the other isn't. no difference beyond that. but I am curious, why are you even looking at a GT240?
 
If you are playing game in mid resolution, this is the card to get and also it doesnt need a 6 pin power.

i'm looking to get it because at $50 and 50w load, it's a decent deal because i will be using this card to crunch/fold. it might be the same output as the 9600gt, but it has lower power consumptions, and this will matter to me when it's at 100% load 24/7.

for a few dollars more and a lot more performance. the GT240 just is not all that great of a card. they also make a 9600GT low power that performs better.
 
I do not know if WIndows Performance Index is a standard or not, but I have a GTS 250 and my Window index was 6.9 for the Aero and Gaming. Then when I do a GT 240 test, it is 6.8 on Aero and Gaming.

Yah, for 70w max and no 6 pin power, I take the GT 240.

You all forget 9xxx are all card from few years back. GT 220,230,240 are new card that was release few months back with the smaller 40nm process.

I say the GT 240 is a good card for gaming in mid resolution and its the best high end card for business and 3d modeling(?) short of going to next step of 6 pin power.
 
lol i didn't really make this thread to try to be convinced on getting another card. i'm getting this card based on price, power consumption, and PPD output when folding/crunching. i found this card to fit that category pretty well.

all i wanted to ask was there any major differences between the two EVGA models because from pictures, almost every capacitor and the whole circuitry board looks the same. the only thing that's different is the color, and i just want to verify this.

more then color as I said, one seems to be a reference card and the other an EVGA custom card. I don't think it makes a practical difference though

how can you tell it's custom besides color? it's the exact same positioning on the circuit board

6.9 is the max score. A GTS 250 dominates a GT 240 in anything game related.

The GT 240 is not a good gaming card at all. It also does absolutely nothing for business usage or 3d modeling. The GT 240 is a decent HTPC card, but sucks for most other roles.

All that said, if the OP thinks the GT 240 fits his needs and has done his research (which it sounds like he did), then he should get a GT 240 :)

These are NOT new cards. They are old, gimped tech that got a die shrink. The only benefit to the 220/230/240 line is lower power consumption. Even a 9600GT trounces a GT240 convincingly.

The 240 is a terrible bang for the buck card. OP would have gotten a far better card for the money by buying a 9800GT Low Power, a GTS 250, a 4770, a 5670, or a 5770.
 
I got the GT 240 for $43 last week. I have run up to 5 instances of VMware and watching 720 and 1080p movie is all I want. Then I got the best deal for my preference.

like I said I don't know if there is a practical difference but manufactures usually do this to either improve the product quality or in low end products to make it cheaper. (lesser quality) This is one of the reasons I am not fond of these cards. these are meant to be cheap cards and the build quality suffers for it. if they were cheaper I would not mind but I just am not impressed value wise with them.

for everyone else, yes i know this is not a gaming card. i would not even consider gaming with this, i already have two gtx260 sli for that. this card is merely a budget folder with low power consumptions. but if anyone can suggest a card lower than 50w and costs less, for more PPD, then i'd be more than happy to buy it (even a used one). i did do my research and this card fits the category perfectly. it's not a gaming card for me.

This is an excellent example of why WPI is a horrible benchmark and is definitely NOT a standard. A GTS 250 is almost twice as fast as a GT 240.

well the LP 9800GT would kick its ass but it has a TPD of 65 watts so its out of your range. If I get overzealous in recommending a different card I will apologize, I am just very much a bang for the buck type (though I have a 5870) so its easy to forget that other may prioritize things very differently. my first reaction is usually something like this : Nvidia puts out a crap card that gets its ass handed to it by a 3 year old tech that only cost 10 dollars more. WTF? and the Galaxy card is pretty impressive. but if it doesn't fit your needs then by all means go with the GT240.
