i have in the back of my pc 2 ethernet ports however it seems that only one works when plugging in a cable, its always been like this but now i will like to run a cable from my pc to my xbox, i have tried the connection wizzard and all that but nothing seems to work

mobo is a asus a8n sli premium

any ideas would be great!

Both of them are showing up in Device manager? In network connections do you see both in there? The other isn't set for disabled is it?

it shows two, 1 says Local Area Connection (but i believe my internet is coming through it) and the other is 1394 connection :S

Check Device Manager and see if there are any unknown devices. The 1394 Connection is actually your firewire port.

Click Start -> Run -> Type "CMD"

Once the command prompt comes up, type "ipconfig /all". This will show you if your network card is disabled or not. If you wish to enable it then just go into your control panel -> network connections.

If it isn't showing up then do what QHalo said and go into your Device Manager and see if there is a question mark next to it.

To go into the Device manager do this.

Click Start -> Right-click your "My Computer" icon -> click properties -> click hardware tab.

This is for Win XP. I don't have Vista, sorry.

there was no unkown devices, there was a few "other" devices but no unknowns.

and i ran the ipconfig and as my net is up enabled, maybe i need to install the other port or somthing?

I'm not sure but can you disable that in the BIOS so that Windows can't even see it? Not too familiar with dual NIC setups on those kind of boards.

yeah its got to be a setting in your bios that disabled the second port.. usually 1 is tied to your northbridge and the second is tied to your south bridge.. thats what it sounds like to me..

is that what i am looking for in the bios? i foolishly went into my bios straight away and realized that i didnt know what i was looking for lol :p

In bios, press teh right arrow to get to the Advanced panel. Highlight "advanced Device Configuration" hit Enter. The 4th selection down is "Onboard NV LAN". MAke sure it is enabled. If it is, and that is the one you are using, then we need to get the Realtek chip going.
