My current system I am a moderate to low gamer. Do I...

A: Buy a 9800pro 128mb now for ~$300 Canadian.
B: Wait a few, or maybe quite a few, months for the 6800GT 256mb to be ~$300-$350 Canadian.

What would you do? Maybe there's another good opportunity I'm forgetting about?

The 9800Pro is a fine card and I don't think the GT will be falling to its price in the foreseeable future.

Are there any specific games you play all the time? What resolution do you like to run at? What are your expectations? Do you demand 200fps all the time or are you happy with lower frames?

Well, the game I play most is Medal of Honor Allied Assault. My 9500pro runs that okay at 1024x768.

I would like to run it at 1280x960 or 1280x1024 with pretty maxed eye candy. The only other game I can see myself playing a bit of in the future is Warcraft 3, which my card can run now, and Half Life 2. Again, at 1280x960 with like 4X fsaa, and 8x AF would be good.

I wonder how much the 6800GT will be this time next year?

I made the mistake of upgrading my GF3Ti500 to a 6800Ultra for Doom 3. Don't get me wrong - it's a great card and I'm happy with it, but buying it for one game was wrong. In your case, I wouldn't rush to upgrade a card based on HL2, unless you plan on getting into the online side of it big time.

My GF3 would run Enemy Territory at high fps in 11x8 resolution and Warcraft 3 at the same res, only getting a bit of slowdown with lots going on - nothing intrusive. I believe WC3 is capped at 60fps (don't take my word for it), so if your 9500Pro plays happily at a good res (it should be quicker than my GF3) it's not going to benefit much. I can now play Enemy Territory at 12x10 with 8xSAA and 16xAF - it looks great, but my GF3 looked pretty good as well. You might find yourself dissatisfied if you aren't careful with your choice and are just a moderate gamer who doesn't pore over the screen looking for minute image quality differences.

I guess what I'm saying is that it might be best to hang on for a while until the current new gen comes down in price. Getting a 9800Pro will probably allow you to go up a resolution or two and increase the quality settings, but you'll need a GT before you can add the AA and AF and stay smooth. Trouble is, you might be waiting a while, but by that time there should be more games that make the most of what the GT can do.
 
I recently had too much extra money and was thinking about a video card upgrade. After alot of research I decided that I would have to get a 6800 GT to see a real world increase compared to my 9500np softmod card. So I'm blowing the cash on water cooling {should be a one time investment} max out my hardware and start saving up for the next major rebuild when I get my tax return check {AMD 64 + PCI E?}
 
A 9800pro is going to start getting long in the tooth pretty quickly....if you don't want to wait you might want to see if you can scrape up enough for a 6800nu (which are going for under $300 in the US) which will outperform the pro and also stands a good chance of oc'ing well and also possibly open up all 16 pixel pipes with Rivatuner. <----I had complete success with this using a eVGA 6800 in a system I built for a coworker. ;)
 
I used to wait and wait and wait to buy computer hardware. Always waiting for the "next big thing" to come out. But eventually you'll realize that in the computer world, no matter what you buy, it's obsolete tomorrow.

Buy the 9800 Pro and enjoy it. You won't see a huge difference over your 9500 though.

Get a 6800 standard. They are priced halfway in between the 9800pro and 6800GT, and its around 15-30% faster than a 9800pro, plus it has the latest features like sm3.0 & openexr hdr lighting. In Doom3 its on par with the more expensive x800pro.

6800 is a great buy for your current situation. Plus there is always the chance of it modding :eek:
 
I've decided against buying a video card at the moment.
