Two 260s, same clocks, different ppd?

Hi everyone,
Got my 260 gtx core 216s both running at 740/1480/1300, but the ppd varies by about 1000k, with gpu2 pushing more. The clocks are ati tool/3dmark vatage/furmark stable. I've got ek full cover blocks on both, with cores maxing at 47c and the voltage regulators maxing at 63c. I've examined the logs, and there are no errors, however gpu1 does take a few more seconds per % than gpu2 on average. My guess is it's because gpu1 is running windows. This happens even overnight with the monitor off and windows locked. I'm running vista ultimate 64 bit. Is this typical or is something wrong? Thanks.
 
Have you checked to make sure your running the same Work unit? my gpus can vary 2k ppd from 4-6k ppd depending on which WU there doing.
 
Yeah, please see if they're crunchin' the same WU arnemetis. If not, please post any solution you come up with :D

If one do a 5748 and one do a 5506, you can see over 1000 ppd of difference so tell me what is the units in each card ?

 
Close you Windows Vista Sidebar and I bet that will fix it.

Edit: After running my comparison tests again, it seems on average when the Sidebar is up, slot 1 card slows by 100-300ppd depending on what Nvidia card I monitored.
 
Don't use the sidebar, but window transparencies WERE on. I turned them off before I left for work today. I'll follow up with what units they were folding when I get home. They are probably folding different units, since no one thinks the discrepancy is normal.

I’ve been running Vista 32 and 64 since day one and neither the side bar or Windows transparency has much effect on folding on either the GPU or SMP clients.

The only way you can possibly see a close PPD would be if you had two of the same WUs at pretty much the same time. Even Work Units of the same kind may fold at different rates as well.

The only way to check for consistent PPD is our stats site;)

I agree with Bill, even the same WU changes during the coarse of the fold. I have sat and watched the ppd change by as much as 1500. That is on all sockets not just the primary.

Interesting. My test have shown on the GPU2 client a ppd loss on slot 1 card with sidebar running up on the desktop.
But then again I have monitoring gadgets that show a lot of movement in the graphs and bars, so experiences may be different.

Yeah, something weird is going on. They are both working on 5506, but here's what happened. When I get home, gpu1 is doing about 7500ppd, gpu2 is doing 7900ppd. After about 10 minutes it has changed to gpu1 doing about 7000ppd, while gpu2 stays strong at 7900ppd. It's been that way for a while now since I've been using the computer to browse the net.
Which was were my next theory lies - gpu1 just isn't using 100% or the power while gpu2 is maxing out. Also while all other temperatues stay close to each other, the voltage regs on gpu2 pick up 10c or so higher than gpu1. So, is there any way to monitor gpu usage?? I've tried the nvidia perfhud thing but I can't find any way to make it work. A gpu monitor would put my worries to rest.
 
I'ver seen FahMon list different PPD for my 280s. They list 8640 for a 5506 99% of the time. Though every once and awhile, one would jump to 8859 while the other remained at 8640.

 
Just a thought. As per op, how are the temp comparisons on the 2 cards. If you are doin over 7k ppd then it sounds like big time oc.
 
Is it a quad or dual core CPU ??
Do you have anything else running ??

Unless you've altered it, GPU 0 will be running on the last CPU core and GPU 1 on the one before that.
Under Windoze the last CPU core tends to run all the background tasks, so something could be running on it thats slowing the gpu client down.
You could try moving the client to another CPU core and see if it makes a difference.
Or set it to run at a slightly higher priority in the advanced config section and see if that also makes a difference.

Update - as of this morning, they have both settled at ~7500 each. I am going to stop worrying about it. It's probably unrelated, but my q6600 is now running at 3.8ghz vs the stock it was at before.

Nice over clock for sure, but then that would give you more HP in the areas Tigger mentioned which just might have solved the problem;)
