Twitch.tv lag

I don't know where else to post this so I'll try here. I don't know if anyone can help me but when I watch streams on twitch.tv, they lag so badly that I can't watch the stream at all. Usually the audio is fine and it's just the video that stops for a few seconds. I am pretty sure it's not my end since I have a brand new gaming pc I just built and my internet seems to be fine, I've never had any problems other than watching streams on twitch. I honestly have no clue if anything can be done or if I just can't watch streams on there anymore but and help would be much appreciated.

We`ll need more info to go on....

What package/tier broadband you have, what kind of router you have what kind of modem you have, how is the device you`re streaming to/from connected to your network? Wired or Wireless?

Spec of the PC, Spec of the video adapter, spec of the tv/display you`re using/trying to use.

Also have you tried some (read several) speedtests using different sites at different times of day. Also just as important, if not more so, as speed/bandwidth is your latency, try pingtest.net, again as different times of day.

Get us some more info and I`m sure the answers you seek will become evident.

I'm not sure of everything but I'll provide what I know. I know that I have comcast xfinity internet and a Netgear router. I'm using wireless with a Netgear N300 wireless usb adapter on my pc end.

PC Specs:
CPU - i5 2500k
CPU Cooler - Corsair H60
Motherboard: MSI H61M-P23
RAM -Patriot 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz
HDD - 500GB 7200RPM Forgot what brand and cache...
GPU - GTX 550Ti Superclocked
Case - Thermaltake VM54521N2U V2 ATX Mid Tower Case
PSU - 450W that came with case... for now

I'm trying to watch via VGA cable on a 26 inch Vizio tv. I am getting an HDMI to use as soon as it comes in the mail.

I used pingtest.net while I was watching the stream to make sure I got the right time.
Server: Dallas, TX Distance ~200 miles. ISP: Comcast Cable
Packet loss: 0%
Ping 32ms
Jitter 8ms
Your grade: A
An excellent result! Expect all Internet applications to work very well assuming you have sufficient bandwidth.

I don't know how to check bandwidth, or even what that is, but I can tell you that I am the only one awake in my house and the only one using internet so I don't think that's a problem.

Anything else you need, I can try to provide.

OK, on the surface it looks like the PC is not the issue.

pop on over to here and do some tests, both round your area and further afield just to get an idea of what sort of performance you can expect from your ISP.

VGA is ok to a point, certainly have another go with a HDMI cable in its place.

If possible try running a network cable from the PC to the router (Make and model of router if you can), that`ll at least eliminate the wireless side of things.

If the streaming experience is still a bit ropey, try running the cable directly to your modem, that`ll eliminate the router.

First off though, get on over to speedtest.net and see how you stack up!

Also, if you have any decent res movies already downloaded, try watching them on your tv, not 100% but don`t recall hearing of the Vizio Brand for TV`s, this could be a TV issue, unlikely, but possible all the same

On speedtest, I've been running tests for a while and I have 3 results from random times of the day. I'll just post all the info they have that I feel is necessary.

Download-18.37 Upload-3.56 Latency-15ms Distance-~150mi
Download-24.79 Upload-3.62 Latency-12ms Distance-<50mi
Download-16.40 Upload-3.56 Latency-25ms Distance-~150mi

I'll run some more tests if necessary because these are all run about the same time of day, only a difference of a few hours, close to noon but no later than 3pm. They were run on July 2, 12, and 15.

I should have the HDMI by Wednesday this week. I can't really run a direct connection because my computer is in a room upstairs where I watch my streams and stuff and my router is on the other side of the house, downstairs. I have a full strength connection wirelessly though, so it's not like I have a super poor connection.

Hmmm ok so you`re capable of around 25Mb down and 3-4Mb up, that seems fine.

I can saturate my 60Mb down with only 2.7Mb up, so I think we can eliminate your ISP/Connection, for now at least anyway.

At this point we need options, some different ways of doing the same thing, Like swapping the VGA cable for the HDMI (when it arrives), and ideally some way to have your computer connected to the LAN/Internet without wireless, cue the ethernet cable.

It could be that your wireless router/access point/USB adapter is having a thrombo under load, the only way to prove this is to use different equipment (Router/Access point/USB adapter) While it is less likely that you will have spares/duplicates of these around the home, it is quite likely that something as simple as popping out for a 10/20/30 metre ethernet cable could quite quickly and simply prove that your issues are wireless related.

Don`t get me wrong, it is quite likely that it`s not your wireless, but without that ethernet cable to connect directly to your router/modem we just aren`t going to know for sure.

It`s just as likely that the USB port you`re using for the 300Mb wi-fi adapter is sharing the same IRQ as something else in your system that needs a lot of throughput, video, hi def audio, pci-e bus for the vid card!? I dunno, but the quickest way, with the least amount of guesswork would be the trusty ethernet cable.

If it turns out to be wireless related then you can than look into a better router/access point combo or even wire your whole house with cat5/5e/6.

Without that cable though, we`re really unable to prove anything beyond what we have so far.

I'm looking into a super long ethernet cable. It's probably going to be a 100ft one but I'll measure later. Would you recommend a cat6 or cat5e? There's a little bit of a price difference but I don't know what would be best.

Also, I have a Razer BlackWidow ultimate and a USB mouse plugged into my 4 usb ports at the back of my computer.

For 100ft (~30M) cat5 would do, but certainly cat5e wouldn`t hurt, I wouldn`t bother with cat6 for a temporary cable run, unless the price is that close to that of cat5/5e

Just remember, if you plan on installing this cable permanently you`ll need to measure very accurately, into all your corners etc.

If it`s just a temp thing then ignore ^^all that^^

Do you have any decent quality movies already downloaded? That will tell us if it is your TV...

100ft difference between cat5e and cat6 is like 2 dollars. The only cables that I can find are 5e and 6 and the longest I can find is 100ft and then a 1000ft cat5 one for I assume running a direct connection plug type thingy. I would like a permanent connection but I can't run a cable across my entire house and up the stairs and everything. The only thing I could do it buy the 1000ft cat5 cable and run it through the attic, and I don't have the money for that, yet.

Also, twitch tv isn't built for the demand it receives at all. If you're complaining about trying to watch ign or esl on it, then we can end the thread now. No one gets those streams off twitch without lag. The ones who say otherwise are trolling you.

I watch captainsparklez, ms_vixen, and Nearbygamer. The stream I have major lag with is ms_vixen when she plays mw3

I want to wire my whole house but I can't because I don't have the money or time for it right now but I also think that I would like to do some powerline networking. Can anyone recommend a good kit with at least 2 adapters and at least 2 ports on the receiving end, I want to connect my pc and my xbox.

I got my HDMI today, no help. I ran speedtest again and got 5ms ping, 22.33 down and 3.59 up.

Do you use any Ad blocker programs? My friend had the same problem and when I told him to disable it, the lag stopped.

traceroute to the servers that are delivering the content to you. Are they close? (below 50ms or within 300 miles?) Good, it's their problem. Bitch at them until they fix it.

If it's really high (100+), you have two options: Their CDN sucks balls, or your DNS servers are probably unicasted and really far away from their CDN (or they don't use GEOIP and they don't know what they're doing)

I do actually use adblock for google chrome. I'll disable it next time the stream is on and I'll see if that works.
