Well, I am getting fed up with my tv, and I want to buy a computer moniter and hook it up so i can watch tv. What do I need to do this. I have a 6800 ul if this makes a differance. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure all the monitor needs is a component in (not sure what tuner or stuf you're hooking it up to). Alot of Dell monitors have this feature.

maybe you could get an ATi tuner card and run it through the computer. I assume you mean basic cable when you say "cable box". if you have digital cable, then I'm not sure if the tuner card would work.

I'm planning on doing this when I get my 2001FP. I'll jsut get a cheap digital tv tuner and run it into the composite input on the monitor. That way I can watch tv without having to turn on the pc.

I have been looking at this little unit to attach to my Dell 2405. Someone here had a mini review on it a while back.

Here is the link.

Yeah, I wrote that minireview in this forum. It's nice to have the external box because you don't need the PC in order to watch TV, but since I routed my sound through my PC speakers , I do need to have the PC on. I rather would have the external box as well, because you can move the box to your living room or something if you end up buying a really nice TV for that room, or anywhere else if needed.

yeah i want to hook it up to the computer so i can watch it. And i dont want to spend alot of money. for 400 plus 500 for a moniter I can just get a plasma tv

I'm using this card:

It gets some pretty good ratings. A lot of good features, even the ability to power up your machine for a scheduled recording.

Also, I wouldn't recommend an external TV Tuner box, those kind of boxes that don't need a computer to run watch tv on a monitor, but you have to loop your computer through it, so there is a good chance for quality loss for your computer picture, especially for LCDs since they don't have DVI, just vga.

So an internal PCI TV Tuner card would be best.

If you have an external tv box, you don't have to feed the computer output through it. The dell screens (2001fp, 2005fpw etc) have multiple inputs so the tv box and the computer can both be directly connected to the monitor.

Also, yes that tuner card would work fine :)

That's true, about the Dells having both ports so you don't have to loop the computer through one, but you do pay more and lose the ability to watch tv in any size window while doing work and any other tivo like features. But if you often want to watch tv from a distance without your computer on, an external box would be fine

I do the same, I have dual display, a 20inch widescreen and a 15inch LCD which I often drag the tv window to.
