TV vs. LCD...

Is it absolutely worth it to go LCD? I have a 17" monitor right now that is serving me well, but i wanna go skinny (monitor-wise). I have 800 dollars to spend, atm, I am considering either the 1800fp (bad aesthetics, great price, well under budget), 191T+ (great aesthetics, a bit of ghosting, under budget), or the 2001fp (no ghosting, some with lots of problems, barely in budget). However, I was looking at Best Buy today, and saw some nice 27" WEGA TVs, these things are sweet, and cost only 500 bux. So, what do you think?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I will be watching TV on whatever I buy, as well as playing games...

as long as you don't want to read text, or do any sort of desktop surfing...

well the TV would be for just watching TV and video games, not for PC browsing...

Hmmm personally I would get a 32" HDTV, BB usually has sales on the Samsung Dynaflats that drop the price to around 800.

The only reason I see LCDs having any worth is for space conservation. Other than that it is proven CRTs have better image quality, refresh rates, no ghosting, no dead pixels and if you change resolutions on an LCD it either just stretches or shrinks, it doesn't "really" change the resolution, hence why they say a LCD has a "native resolution". Also there is the off-angle issue(ie looking at the image from an angle). LCD is just the hip fad these days, maybe in 2 years they will get better. Unfortunately OLEDs will be king by then(Organic LEDs).

If it was me, I would decide between a NEC 21" CRT or a circa $800 HDTV.

just did a google on OLED tech, couldnt find a release date, do you know of any?

also, i was thinking of just getting a 1703fp, and saving up some more money for a WEGA Tv...

OLEDs are not on the market yet except for this one samsung camera. It is a very promising technology and can be made paper thin and look as good as CRT.(imagine screens on the back of people's shirts lol)

Get a 19" NEC CRT for 300-400 and get the WEGA with it. I'm using a ViewSonic A90f, it is a decent monitor for the price($300).

I would wait for some more money to arrive and get a progressive scan compatable HDTV and maybe hold off on a new PC monitor. Or get a new NEC CRT and wait until you get enough for an HDTV. I use my TV for video games and DVD viewing/general watching. I just got the Zenith 32" HDTV-ready, it is excellent.

meh...tv i can get a bit later, now that I think about it...what really bothers me is this:

1703fp now, save money for another later on (definately by May/June)

or

2001fp now, buy second much much much MUCH later.

I am having trouble deciding which one is better to do...

Well I am only going to say this once more, I highly recommend a nice CRT compared to any LCD(CRTs are cheaper and look better still and in motion) but if you are really set on an LCD I've heard nothing but problems from the 2001fp.

thats the thing, my CRT, atm, is verrrry nice, only problem is, it heats up the room and uses a sh1t load of power...

Uhh, what do you mean it uses a shitload of power? The most-recommended CRT of the [H], the 22" NEC 2141, uses the equivalent of two 75 watt lightbulbs. A typical 17" LCD uses one bulb's worth. Your PC itself probably uses the equivalent of 3 bulbs when surfing, maybe 4 when gaming. Small price to pay for all the benefits Bop mentioned (and you get to use it right away instead of RMAing an LCD one or more times for dead or stuck pixels). I haven't noticed much heat from my older 22" NEC, but that's in comparison to the heat my PC puts out.

Dunno, I'm a big CRT fanboy for now and can put up with the small loss of desktop space (buy a bigger desk), the extra weight (how often does a monitor get moved, anway?), the slightly higher power consumption (pennies a day), and the little bit of heat (my furnace died yesterday and it's freezing in here. Seriously) rather than all the negatives of current-generation LCDs. Thin displays will someday surpass CRTs in many areas (not all), but for now, my money stays with the good ol' tubes.

Bitchnmoan has it right.

My monitor has been on for several hours, its barely even warm. Power consumption is not a issue as he already stated.

Get yourself a 21" NEC, save $200-400 and buy some stuff for your PC or anything else.

It is undeniable that CRTs are better in every category except size. They are cheaper too. I bet if you buy a LCD you will regret not getting that big shiny NEC 2141 instead.

forgot to mention, it's a complete bitch to dust my CRT, and I am VERY allergic to dust. also, i am a bit short on space...

You do know the dust will just end up behind an LCD monitor on your desk instead of on top of a CRT monitor, right? That means the dust will just be closer to you, but either way there is no way to get rid of dust, either way you go there will be just as much.

If you have enough space go for the CRT, that is the bottom line. The only reason to get an LCD is for size.

With all the money you save getting a CRT you could also get a new shiny desk.

already got a shiny new desk, but with an LCD you can easily move the monitor to clean that dust...I really dont have too much space, so it essentially comes down to either the 1703FP, the 191T+ or the 2001FP.
