I cannot seem to find a straaight answer anywhere. Do TV tuners such as the Ceton allow you to watch as well as RECORD television like a Tivo?

So a TV tuner is all I need to record HD/SD cable tv, no separate recording card or devices needed?

With the ceton you can record hd/sd but no on demand ( will not have that ability at all). You will need a cable card which is usually ~$3 a month for rental.

There are other options but that is the most "complete" one available without a ton of hassle.

a tuner card is all you need to record tv. but pay attention to the type of tuner card you get.

regular tuners can only record unencrypted HD channels over the air, or unencrypted clear QAM over cable (basic channels only), or old school SD content.

if you want to record your entire digital cable package, your only option is to get the centon tuner of hd homerun prime tuner that utilizes a cable card which you rent from the cable company for $5 a month.

You can not record satellite, fios, or uverse.

If you are meaning simultaneous watching and recording multiple channels than you need more tha 1 tuner.

The ceton card is a 4 tuner card.

Also with all cards software, aka front ends, are needed.

Windows vista and 7 home premium have Windows Media Center which is the only front end that is cable card compatable.

Sagetv is also popular with the HD-PVR and a HD cable box.

You can record fios with the ceton from what i have seen.

Satellites can be recorded with the hd-pvr but thats a whole nother topic
