Turning HyperThreading off Removes Stutter in BF3

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'm going to be disabling hyperthreading. I guess this is a in general thing not just for battlefield 3. I use my rig for gaming and watching youtube videos. Youtube uses flash and is gpu accellerated via my browser so It doesn't appear I really use hyperthreadikng that much to justify the negative impact it gives me in games.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. Is this for all games or just battlefield 3? Do you have any data on other games?

HT seems to specifically affect BF3 - but a lot of people with 2600Ks don't seem to be having the problems, so it may not be affecting you (at least the stuttering part).

Did you see this post linked to us just above http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1037945973&postcount=135

It shows that with hyperthreading it seems to cause a microstutter type of effect in BF3. I'm wondering if some of the multi gpu microstuttering I've been seeing people complain about can be improved by disabling crossfire. In fact it's one of the first things I'm gonna suggest now just for a quick troubleshooting step.

Yep, but the 2600K doesn't seem to have that seem problem, or at least not all of them do (most of the people experiencing it have Nehalems). I posted some shots in that same thread.

Oh thanks for the info. BTW can you link the thread please. Since only a single post was linked I didn't see the thread.

At first I only had the problem in campaign, then the 2nd time going through co-op it started happening and when I next connected to a conquest match same thing. Disabling HT fixed the problem, I really hope it gets fixed though, I'd rather not have to have HT disabled.

I never noticed a problem with HT on. Just for fun, I tried disabling and HT and there was no improvement. I only tested it in single player however.. on a i7 920 @4.0, 6950 1gb eyefinity (5040x1050) w/ latest drivers and CAP, and 12gb ram.

So this isn't effecting 2600Ks then?

Really hope disabling HT doesn't pose an improvement, such a ballache thing to do just for one game.

2600k @ 4.5Ghz here with HT on. Absolutely no stuttering under any situation at 1920x1080 with all in Ultra but MSAA off. (Geforce 560 Ti, which is causing artifacting)

I've joined this Forum now as a result of all the info, really useful :)

Anyway, I had some problems with stuttering and it was really frustrating me, so I came across this last night and thought why not, I'll give it a try and disable Hyperthreading on my i7 860.

The BEST thing I have even done for gaming ever!! Battlefield 3 now has absolutely no stuttering whatsoever, and I also have an extra 10-20 frames per second (and that is no joke). So it really shows just how important the CPU is too.

I also tried the Battlefield commands, bringing up the in game performance, I tried it with HT and I tried it without HT. With HT I got numerous BIG spikes in the graph and of course horrible stuttering. I then tried the graph without HT, and guess what? Smooth as butter, the graph (both CPU & GPU) stayed perfectly balanced on pretty much every level, bar one or two tiny little spikes on a couple of levels. The thing is though, even when it did (rarely) spike with HT off, it didn't affect the performance in game whatsoever, so no stuttering.

I can't believe how much of a difference it's made, I was so so so happy, because I knew my pretty high end system should be performing better than it was. Anyway, problem solved and it's now playing exactly how I expected in the first place, AND MORE!.

I have an XFX HD 6950 2GB OC'd, I went from playing with everything on ULTRA (with AA turned off) at 40-60 FPS to now playing with everything on ULTRA with AA turned on (x2 MSAA) running at anywhere between 50-80 FPS, and I get no micro stuttering whatsoever, even if the FPS drops from 70 - 50 in a millisecond, it's all just nice and smooth now. With Vsync or without Vsync, bar the difference of a few frames here and there, the performance is very similar.

I have heard people trying to blame Vsync for the stuttering, well in my case that simply isn't true. I tried it both on and off with HT and without HT, and the Vsync made no difference whatsoever. I tried countless combinations of graphics settings, numerous settings in the catalyst centre, all to no avail. Then I disable Hyperthreading, and now get to experience just how good BF3 and other games really are without stuttering.

The thing is too, I started to think before I disabled HT just like some guys here, that I didn't have stuttering, or maybe I was being fussy and imagining something that wasn't happening. I was also sceptical as regards to how much of a difference this was going to make, like 'Hmmm, yeah right, this ain't gonna work'

I dunno, but something just didn't feel right when looking around and moving on games, especially BF3. Now it really is like playing a different game, I spent hours online and offline last night just running around like a headless chicken marvelling at how smooth the gameplay had become. I got a warm feeling in my stomach and felt so relieved, because I was so annoyed at the problems previously, and now to have next to none is just fantastic.

If you haven't disabled HT and you are getting stuttering, then honestly I couldn't recommend it enough. Thank you very much for all of the helpful advice on here guys, I'm so glad I stopped by!! :)
