turn tables and soundcards

hi all. i'm looking at getting some new audio equipment soon. basically i need to upgrade my soundcard and speakers, and i intend to get a turn table as well. i was hoping to use the turn table on my computer, but i'm not sure if there are any soundcards that have a phono preamp. does anyone know if the audigy 2 zs does, as that would be my first choice for the new soundcard? if not, are there any decently competitive cards that do? i would primarily be using the card for music, but i also need to use it for tv/videos/games. thanks a lot.
 
any sound card will attach to a record player. however, the sound quality would probably be better if you just attached the record player directly to your speakers than going a/d and then d/a. if it's primarily for music, you might want to look at the m-audio revolution.
 
I'm sorry to say this, but there are no soundcards at all that have a built-in phono preamp. You will have to purchase a separate, add-on one, at prices that range from about $100 to the thousands of $$$ (depending on the model).
 
Just a few examples of cards that have phono stages.
The Terratec DM6fire has a phono pre (it is a pretty good gaming card as well).
The EMU1820 also has a phono pre....but it may not be an option here cause of it's price.

FWIW I agree that a standalone phono stage is a better solution.
As far as directly connecting a turn table to a sound card goes..... it will work but the noise floor will be incredibly high and there is no RIAA equalization. Of course software can handle the RIAA EQ part.....

Oh, I stand corrected on this. But the cards which have built-in phono preamps cost as much $$$ as or more $$$ than a decent standalone phono stage.
