Turn off wireless keyboard + mouse

I just purchased my first pair of wireless keyboard & mouse. (Labtec media Desktop 800).Everything works fine but how do you get them to turn off when not in use. The red led below the optical mouse still blinks when the computer is off.
Else if I don't remove the batteries and keep them on 24/7 does this reduce the life span of the product.

They typically go into sleep mode until they are moved and generally do not have an off switch. They will still drain the batteries, slowly though. There should not be any impact on the product's life span.
