Turn off reflection in Vista

You don't need to be psychic to know that for anything that's animated in a window manager, there will be someone who doesn't like it (and you can turn off pretty much everything else.

Anyways, I just installed the uxtheme hack and used resource hacker to remove those annoying reflections. Problem solved, and aero still active.

You just dont cater to the few...

Simple as that, the few that dont like it, too fucking bad. Thats the way the world works.

The reflections are static, not animated.

They move relative to the titlebar when you move the window.

they only move very slightly horizontally as you pan the window across the screen, not enough to notice unless you moved two windows past one another looking for it.

I said this months ago and people still don't get it:

The lines don't move. They appear to move because you're moving the window. It's the same effect as if you held a piece of glass in front of yourself and you could see the reflection of objects behind you: they don't move, but the glass does, hence you (the viewer) gets the impression "the stuff is moving" when it's not.

'Nuff typed.

So? If you move a window, they move relative to the titlebar. That's what I said, and it still is true. Anyways, they bothered me, so I removed them.

Joe Average's machine must be weird. On mine, and on any other I've seen, the diagonal thingumibobs move relevent to both window AND background, when a program window is dragged about. I tried disabling transparency to check, and they do the same that way too. The 'lines' change genuine position as well as change relative position.

It's part of the Vista Theme' experience. Symbolic representation of a 'Vista' or view of the world through a window. If it annoys use something else.

By the way. The 'reflection' effect was initially intended to move in accordance with time of day:

That was kinda omitted from the final build.

That's what I'm doing now, but I shouldn't have to install some binary hack to a system file just to be able to change my theme...

They do move, but VERY slightly.
Just get a background with lots of focal points on it, and try moving it around... You can see the diagonal lines move. You have to move the window around quite a bit to really see it though.

But at any rate this is such a stupidly minor thing to complain about, I just think... "Don't people have better things to worry about?"

It adds unnecessary visual clutter. Sure I could live it... but I would prefer living without it.

Joe i dont know what your definition of move is but i just switched to aero to see for myself and they most certainly without a doubt do move.

They dont appear to move, they do move.

The lines themselves don't move; they're static. The level of color/transparency in your title bar is a gradient, which creates the illusion of moving lines as you move the window horizontally. Try moving the window vertically or diagonally to see what I mean.

They move... put a ruler up to the side of your monitor and watch the lines move along it.

That by every definition of the word is movement.

They don't when moving vertically or with the diagonal of the reflection. It's an illusion created by the gradient curve of the title bar. What part of that didn't you understand?

When you put a fucking ruler up horizontally and watch it move by inches as you move a window you cannot call that a fucking illusion...

If it moves, its movement and dont pull the "illusion" crap its a piece of software written to do what it does. It does not do so because its an optical illusion it does so because a programmer fucking told it to. That my friend is movement, deliberate and programmed movement.

EDIT:
To remove any doubt.

Watch the reflection move in relation to the above window.

I know what your saying Arainach about it being an "illusion" what im saying is that argument could be made if this where a real piece of glass in a real outside environment but this is a theme in a piece of software it was written to move and it does.

If it wasn't clear enough in the YouTube video, this should resolve things once and for all:

And for the users at home, open a window, grab the right hand side of the window frame, and resize the window while watching the reflection. Oh my god, it moves! :p

And thanks for giving me a good laugh. I've been as amazed by comments suggesting that it doesn't move as I have by the contentions that it's actually something worth complaining about!
