Turbocharger Cooling

So I was reading my Dec 2003 (?) issue of Maximum PC and their mod contest had someone using an actual turbocharger used on cars to cool his system. is this really possible? anyone ever consider it?
 
Uh.. How was the turbine spun? A big ass motor? Those blades can push tons of air, but what was spinning them..?

I'd sure as HELL like to know. How someone could have a turbocharger function in a computer.

Having anything power a turbocharger must cause massive heat itself, considering a turbocharger doesn't mean "ICE COLD HEAT". It gets hot as well during the process.
 
You get diminishing heat dissipation results with incresing airflow linearly. So, it wouldn't be much better then say, a 90CFM fan.

Uhh in real life on cars it gets hot because its powered BY heat ie exhaust. It doesn't just get hot because its special! :p
 
I recall seeing something about this a few years back. The guy had built a beer cooler out of an old turbo as well. It was some huge mass of machinery, all to cool a single Guiness. Totally worth it. :D I wish i had the links still. (EDIT: oh wait, that was a turbine beer cooler, my bad... http://www.asciimation.co.nz/beer/index.html).
 
The major problem I see is the pressurized oil required to feed the spindle bearings.......
 
Ah, to answer my own question, yes. It does use a big ass motor to spin it.
 
Turbo's produce very little heat in and of themselves, it's the engine exhaust driving the turbo that makes a turbo hot. A turbocharger's bearings are oil cooled, not liquid cooled. They need good lubrication running in the extreme conditions they were designed for. A diesel engines exhaust can reach as high as 1200- 1400 degrees. That's way hotter than anything you'll ever see in a computer.

Actually, much of the heat comes from the compression of the air. Note that the intake air from a supercharger will also be very hot, and they don't run off of exhaust. Supercharged systems don't often use an intercooler because they don't typically see the high levels of intake (boost) that a turbo charged system might. Also, most modern turbo chargers are water cooled.
