Tuniq Tower @ 40+ idle?

Hey all,

I just installed a Tuniq Tower on a 3600+ Brisbane. I went ahead and lapped the heatsink pretty well right after I bought it and installed it with some Arctic Silver 5. However, I'm still getting around 44°C idle temperatures with fan speed on low. When I turn it to high it drops to about 42°C. The stock heatsink ran about 46-47°. I applied a super-thin layer of AS5 as directed...and I shouldn't have needed too much since the bottom of my heatsink was well lapped. What gives? What could I have done wrong?

Here is my Everest data after about 15 minutes of idle:

My specs are:
Lian Li a05b
ABIT KN9
AMD X2 3600+ Brisbane + Tuniq Tower on crack
8600GT
2gb OCZ Reaper
Corsair 520W

EDIT: this is also my first build...please help!

This is your first build... and you lapped the heatsink base?

Maybe that's it.

Have you checked the heatsink base and the cpu top for flatness?

Take the hsf off and look at the thermal paste to see if there's good metal to metal contact.

Does that mean I should check to see if the heatsink spread evenly on the processor and the heatsink base?

I installed the Tuniq before I lapped it and was getting the same temperatures....that's why I decided to try and lap it. I used 320->600->1000->1500 grit. After lapping my temperatures dropped by like 1°

Maybe it was already mostly flat? If you did everything correctly, then that's about the only answer you can get.

Thats rather high, imo. So uh, how tight did you screw those bolts down? Use a straight edge ruler or CC to test for CPU IHS flatness.

in that case would i need to lap my processor too?

EDIT: P.S. Is 46-47° around normal for a stock heatsink?

I've heard the Brisbane's have some temperature reading problems. Could that be the case? If so, how do I get an accurate reading?

I have a 3600+ brisbane and they don't read the temps right. Download a program called core temp and it will tell you the temperature of the separate cores and thats what you need to worry about.

Hey all, thanks for your suggestions. I downloaded Coretemeter and it showed significantly lower temperatures. Anyways, I scoured some more forums and found that aBit just released a new BIOS update for my motherboard a couple of days ago that fixed the Brisbane temp errors. Now my temperatures are down to 26° idle and they match the Cortemeter temperatures.

yay I didn't get a cracked up Tuniq!
