Tune up for 5+ computer

Trying to decide what core2 would be best for a mild upgrade for a computer that only is used for the net.

Currently has a E7400 which is solid, just on the lower end of the scale.

I can go with the fastest 775, E8600 or a Q9550 @ 2.83

My thought is the quad might be overkill because surfing the net does not need multi-thread so speed would be king plus core2quads are on the expensive side.
CPU compare shows the E8600 to of course be fastest in single thread.
I doubt it can overclock much since it's at the very top range.

Thoughts?
 
You can get the higher end dual cores dirt cheap now, but the quads are going to cost you, because that's what everyone who is almost done with the 775 socket has or is upgrading to. The e8xx series were great over clockers, especially the more recent steppings. My e0 e8400 used to run at 4.2 comfortably.
 
4.2? wow that is quite the clock.
Looking around at amazon and places the E8600@3.33 are going for <$40.

Should suffice for just a net browser.
